i'm a new owner of Sonar -- still working through the tutorials and getting a feel for the 'model'.

i know there have been a couple of threads with the VSampler/Kontakt incompatibilities: the install of VSampler left Kontakt behaving badly, edit windows not openeing etc.

so as it sits on my system now, VSampler is installed, but not registered and I haven't pushed it to see if Kontakt is still working fully or not.

so I'm asking what the 'smart' thing to do at this state is. With Kontakt I can't really see a need for VSampler, except there's these 2 CDs of content that I hate to waste and unless I'm mistaken (except for the lowest level wav samples) that content is in a proprietary VSampler format.

I hear ya...

When I upgraded to Sonar 3P, I was already using Kontakt and was extremely happy with it. Then I learned about the issues w/VSampler, and decided not even to install it.

If you give me a few minutes, I can try to find some posts on the topic at Cake's forum....

Some people have reported that the VSampler3 content isn't very impressive.

I still have Sonar 2.2 (haven't gotten around to it - I was going to this month if not for the Sonic Reality buy and a buddy wanting me to buy back the keyboard I sold him)... but I upgraded vsampler to 3.x full since I had the full version from the past.

One advantage of VSampler over Kompakt (I don't have Kontakt) is that Kompakt has very limited MIDI remote control (I think just mod wheel and panning). Once I got sfz+, though, I haven't used VSampler for anything more than making soundfonts.

Most of the known issues were resolved with Vsampler (3.04). Frankly, I think it's an amazing product and an amazing value (ie, great price).

Registration is easy. It's very flexible. You got it with Sonar, right? Go ahead and install it- try for yourself and see :)
