... and I know nothing about music with words.

I need one for a p!sstake project I just thought up, so:
a) it needs to be dirt cheap (ie, no more than £25-40)
b) can't require a mic stand (because I don't have, nor want, one)

A desktop Behringer jobbie would be ideal but I can't seem to find one that isn't USB.

Do I need a preamp? NFI. I do own a few audio interfaces and a Mackie desk with pre-amps so I guess not.

A desktop one still has a stand, it's just built in.

Get a Behringer XM8500 and a small desktop stand. It'll still be less than £40

Superlux WH5.

Sale price is ~£42 (what I got mine for). Comes with stand, sounds good and you can pretend to be in Good Morning Vietnam.

CPC (part of farnell) has cheap, but very good, XLR cables.

Thomann have it for €72, so £56ish. Check ebay and Amazon for lower.

Mine was from Thomann, but on sale.

But if your requirement is "get a voice recorded dirt cheap" instead of "get a mic dirt cheap" then use the voice recorder app on your phone. Some ear buds for monitoring, import and line up in your daw. That costs nothing and with some eq you're good enough for rock'nroll.

Yeah I don't know why I was overthinking it TBH. It seems like a straightforward and simple purchase.

I guess knowing nothing about them made me overcomplicate the whole thing.

Think I'll pop on down to KeyMusic Utrecht at the weekend and see what they have.

It does look good indeed but I genuinely wont use it again so I would be reluctant spending that much.

Pyle Pdmik1. Real piece of trash but it's the cheapest XLR microphone you can find. Less than $5 on Amazon.
