I haven't even downloaded SynAdd but I find this kind of exercise to be interesting and informative.olepro wrote:Do you know SynAdd from programming it? its not easy to read anything from the Pad Synth parameters that can be translated to any other synth !zerocrossing wrote:Can you post the preset... or at least the parameters? Let's do a shoot out.olepro wrote:These are not presets from the synth, i made them.zerocrossing wrote:That's not too shabby. Is that one of its presets? If it is, let me know which one and I'll try to replicate it with an analog and see what happens. I love stuff like this. I tried replicating a Modulus (a synth I seriously G.A.S. for) .002 in software and I could never quite get it even though I had the patch parameters right in front of me. I came to the conclusion that there was just something about those filters that isn't easily replicated.
They are from ZynAddSubFX, one of the best sounding soft synths i know of.
Sounds stupid, but it really has that sound of analog![]()
When i find time i can post the presets

No, on that one it actually sounds better because Korg used the full 16 bit ROM samples in the software, whereas in the hardware they truncated it down to.. I think 11 bit (?) to save money in the hardware. Korg obviously saw the cut corner as a negative and fixed it when they could. Now, if you told me Waldorf had done a Microwave XT plug in and they upped the wavetable files to 16 bit, I'd say that the 8 bit nature of the original synth did contribute a lot to it's character (though I went Ensoniq at that time because I preferred the higher resolution of their Transwave system) but with the Wavestation... That was just trying to come in at a price point.AnX wrote:FTFYzerocrossing wrote:Actually, the Wavestation plug in is one of the examples of the software sounding significantly better for me as well as being much easier to program. Check it out.deastman wrote:I find these debates somewhat tedious. I don't really feel the need to justify my choice of tools other than to say that I use what I like. I have an Andromeda and I love it. I also love Diva and countless other softsynths. And just for Theo's benefit, I have a Wavestation SR which I hate to program and pretty much only ever use as a preset ROMpler.
Now, if I had written, "the Wavestation software has better character" I'd concede that "for me" should go in there. Like you might say, "I like listening to records because of the character of vinyl" even though the fidelity of the record isn't as good as a CD. But in this case we're talking about measurable fidelity of the playback of a ROM file.

i don't think what people like is relevant in this respect. Like I said before, people like listening to vinyl but it's inarguably lower fidelity than a CD.AnX wrote:So nobody prefers the hardware over the software?
It's a little different with analog emulations though. There are computational limits to eliminating all the possible artifacts, though I suppose if it didn't have to happen in real time these could be overcome. I did a great impersonation of a .002 using Diversion, but to get it right I had to crank up ths oversampeling to a point where I could only get it right when rendered.

Theo, 2 things. And nothing personal.TheoM wrote:btw if anyone wants me to lock this I will... I really didn't start it to upset anyone, not even remotely, but a lot here seem to think it's a stupid topic. I certainly do NOT want to offend anyone and come across as some hardware elitist. It's just a sound preference. It goes to show how different we all are anyway, (for example),i actually prefer that korg reduced the quality of the WS hardware samples.. the whole hi fidelity of them in the software version has killed the WS for me.. honestly i never ever use it.. anyway, found an SR rack for 200, grabbed it. Like new condition. Will be selling my legacy collection![]()
The bazille example presented in this topic sounded absolutely *awful* to me, yet people liked it. I couldn't think of anything more sterile and digital than that one demo. So probably the best answer was one of the first ones in the topic, that it's all SO subjective that maybe it really is a pointless topic. Hmmm. PS i liked the zynaddsubfx examples.
1) You do come off as a hardware elitist. Sorry, you just do. In fact, probably more so than anybody else I've run into here and that's saying a lot.
2) It IS all subjective personal taste. There are no rights or wrongs here. It's simply how we all feel. You couldn't give me your hardware for nothing. I have no room or need for it. And no, I'm not a software elitist. I grew up with Moog, ARP, Oberheim and more hardware synths than most people here have gotten their hands on. I lived that wretched life and wouldn't go back to it for all the tea in China.
Peace.

It's not one way or the other anymore and you need to move beyond that way of thinking. It's give and takes. This is better at this, that is better at that. What do you like? what can you afford? What will be useful? These are the kinds of questions you have to ask yourself. There is no desert island synth.AnX wrote:So nobody prefers the hardware over the software?

Wait a bit and you'll see an "all hardware is crap, I'm selling it all out" threadwagtunes wrote: Theo, 2 things. And nothing personal.
