Plus all the updates that have been released within the period of your membership, is it not so?

As far as I know everything you ever legally downloaded an installed from the Cakewalk servers (at least theoretically) keep working until forever.
Like I said, if you've paid for a version for a minimum of 12 consecutive months, you've paid for it outright, and get whatever version it was on when you last paid. If you havent paid for a version for a minimum of 12 consecutive months, you havent bought it outright, you dont own it.

Up to 12 months : you're buying the product in installments
12 months : you own the product
Past 12 months : you're buying the most recent month's update

You can't re-sell the license therefore you own 'nothing'.

logic fail. 'own' in this context carries exactly the same meaning as with any other software, ie 'have paid for the right to use'.
the ability to transfer that right to use confers no change on actually having the right in the first place.

Upgraded from Sonar X3 Producer to Sonar Platinum (lifetime membership). Come what may.

Tungsten theme looks very nice and all my Waves plugins work again.
Optimal number of audio plugins is one more than you currently have.

And with Sonar you can't transfer the license.
You're paying for the right of usage, nothing more. You cannot transfer the license you purchased. You own 'nothing' - fact..

You own 'nothing' with any other software either. Fact.

Wrong again.

One can sell & transfer certain licenses they've purchased i.e. Cubase, certain plugins.
Sonar you can't, you don't own the license -
you own nothing, it's that simple.

Wrong again. You're fallaciously conflating the right of use with the ability to transfer the right of use. Its that simple.

they talked about it in the video, but I didn't quite understand it (might be my lack of English skills) - what about extra content (plugins) that was always a big part of the attraction of the top-of-the-line paid updates?
As they said it in the video I understood it so that such additional content (understandably) won't be part of the lifetime update membeship, but now you say it is content-wise exactly the same as the anual paid-for updates* - so which is it?

That all really depends on several factors but we'll still be making plugins and content to sell separately, like we do today. But for example, when TH3 came out it was included in the update. So was Melodyne 4 Essential, which was a free update anyway I believe. We updated the mastering plugins and included that in the update. But we also released Rapture Pro and that was available separately. These kinds of decisions about what to include in the program have always been there and we have passed on bundling deals in the past because it didn't make financial sense.

The other factor here is that the majority of feedback we have gotten is that people don't want plugins as much as they want improvements to the core program. Editing, MIDI, Comping, and yes we know about notation. That being said, we've introduced some cool core features over the past few years and we have some ideas for UI enhancement including the workspaces we announced two days ago. There's more to come as well.

I hope this helps clarify a little. Understand I can't reveal the entire product roadmap but we are tackling some big areas of the program so these aren't just minor fixes moving forward. And that hasn't been the case over the past 18 months.

TheoM wrote:Arossa, do you know if CAL was ported to the mac alpha? I am just trying to wonder how midi functions like legato/batch velocity functions etc will work without CAL. Hopefully you can pass on a feature request that ALL the cal scripts are built into a future version of sonar in a simple midi function preset windows (like PT(menu)/Logic/Cubase etc).

This may have changed as i haven't used Sonar since Jan 2013, X2. :)
Hi THeoM, it's suppose to be working in the Alpha. We haven't put it through a vigorous test quite yet but it should be available for testing in the free Alpha version this fall. We are also looking into MIDI enhancements for the future.

Thank you AROSSA. I got an email from support today and I'm very happy with the service. :tu:
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Well, that, and the fact that every company out there with with a 'subscription' expects continuous, ongoing payment for you to be able to continue to use the product, whereas CW's system, however you choose to describe it, means that after you've paid for 12 months, you are considered to own that version of the product in perpetuity.
And that's a lot more than 'semantics'. Its buying (in staged payments) versus renting. Any claim otherwise is the farce.
Agree.

In Photoshop CC when you stop paying the monthly fee you no longer can use it.
Do not know why most disregard that in CW plan after 12 months you keep and use Sonar.

So I had no issue with the Sonar subscription plan.

jens wrote:See, Arossa? That is exactly what I meant - your maketing-team managed to make people believe that Sonar stops working as soon as the subscription runs out - so strong is their belief, that they won't even stop believing it when you tell them that they got it all wrong.

jinotsuh, thanks for partcipating - your help is really much appreciated - I could not have hoped for a better patient. While we at this point have neither cure nor treatment for you, don't assume your participation won't be significant.
It's a payment plan is all it is. No different than paying monthly payments for a car. You stop paying before the car is paid off, they repossess it. Calling it a membership or even subscription is silly and causing all sorts of confusion. They should just call it a payment plan and be done with it.

The problem is, like cars, a new version comes out every year and you don't get that new version for free because you bought the previous model. That's why I think they went the route of a membership because your "warranty" runs out after a year and you get no more free tune-ups. For that, you need an "extended warranty" (another year membership) to continue getting those updates.
