Problems With Velocity Transmission in Evolution MK-461C

I think I may have pushed a wrong button on my Evolution MK-461C controller. I seem to have lost the ability to transmit midi velocity (it only plays/records velocity at 100). Everything else seems to be working properly. I looked through the manual, and nothing really clicked (although there is a small section on setting up different velocity curves--but that does not seem to apply here).

If anyone has any thoughts how to fix this, please let me know. Thanks.

Have you tried the advanced user guide at evolutions site? it contains a bit more than the basic stuff that´s in the getting started manual.

If it does´nt work you can always backup the memory presets with the m-audio enigma software (its alot better then the librarian that comes with the keyboard), and reset the keyboard back to factory settings.

Thanks, Erki. I will download and print out the full manuals when I get the chance. But, after a quick look at the online pdf, I was able to quickly reset to original factory settings and that did the trick (I have not saved any custom settings as of yet).

SO, jeffn1 -- how do you like that evolution controller? I'm just curious because I am just about to need a new one, and have had my eye on that exact one.

Does it feel good? Or does it feel "cheap"? Do you use the knobs, etc., at all for controlling VSTi's?

The keys feels quite cheap, but if you are not a piano player that requires perfect velocity sensitivity and weighted keys it will work quite fine for most things. The knobs, sliders, pitch and mod wheel does not feel cheap though and work very well. There´s no problems controlling VSTis with them, no jerky movements at all in the VSTi so the output resolution from the sluders/knobs seems just fine.

IN terms of the feel of the keyboard, I have it sitting right next to me Roland JV-80. There is a very different feel between them

The Evolution keyboard is far more "spongy". I think I like the JV-80 feel better, but it is probably just a matter of getting used to the Evolution.

The faders and rotary controllers appear to function well, but I have not come to scratching the surface (as you could probably tell by the question I brought up in this post).

Hey, JeffN -- I've got the MK-261 and you should try setting a curve. Mine has C1 through C8 curves, but three fixed settings (F1=78 I think, F2=100, F3=128). Sounds like you've switched to whatever is F2 on yours.

Yup, I am sure that is exactly what I did. Since I did not have any custom settings, I just reset to factory settings.

I have a MK-461 and my initial reaction was the same as Jeffn1 (felt cheap/spongy). However, the spongy-ness can work to benefit when playing dynamic (piano) sounds, as it provides a form of tactile feedback that may work for you. I also have a Edirol PCR-30, and honestly the Edirol does feel a bit better made, but I needed a pitch wheel in my setup for my playing style, so I went with a two vendor approach. FWIW, the software implementation on the Evolution is much more intuitive than the Edirol. The Evolution also has nine sliders that can be inverted (instead of the usual eight) if you're into organ drawbar sims...
