Most stable nonsense free DAW?

Reaper is not free, it's Afaik $60 ? There is also Ableton Lite (I think the official name is "Intro") which is in the same price range. Both are very stable but not free.

There's actually Ableton Live Lite AND Intro. Lite is the smallest version, and often comes with hardware. Intro is the smallest version of Live you can buy at their shop.

There probably is none. I can't imagine many people spending hours in a major studio producing electronic music on the clock, that's not what most people hire major studio rooms for. Having said that, I'd be surprised if Reason and similar things aren't in use in the production process in hip-hop and other more electronic genres, and on commercial records.macmurphy wrote:source?TACruise wrote: it's simply a fact that ZERO major studios are producing music with it.
People don't typically hire major studios to sequence midi, they hire them for the good rooms, the consoles, the mics, the outboard gear, and the engineering talent, not to make beats.
On the other hand, some of those places do have multiple rooms and might have a separate production room using Reason or something for people who can't do that at hime for free.

Maybe one should define what "major studios" means then. If mixing and mastering studios are meant, of course, DAW's which rather aim at music production rather than mastering won't be very prominent. I would figure the OP looks for a DAW for music production in any case though. And Reason is very prominent there. "No names" like The Prodigy, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy or Tom Middleton have used, or are using Reason.
Anyway, for me, this seemed like the usual "4 posts, and registered a couple of days ago" trolling anyway. memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=380123

It's contextual. When someone here (on this forum) talks about "music production" it's the vast majority of the time talking about "electronic music production". Large commercial studios may accomodate that because people do that, but they mostly aren't built for that purpose afaik.
Most electronic music is probably produced in project studio rooms, or in producers homes or personal studios, not at Abbey Road. You don't need 2000 square feet of studio live room and 50k of mics and outboard to make an EDM instrumental.
I'm pretty sure some of the project rooms here doing mostly hip-hop have Reason, and FL and other similar things though, they're not exactly expensive, and some really large studios have multiple rooms, including smaller midi production rooms.

That is correct.. it was Music production that is the main thought here.. if it was just straight recording and mixing with included plugs then I could go with any DAW and I am sure that most of them are stable out of the box... but having said that it seems its more or less "misbehaving" virtual instruments that can make any DAW unstable. ... its just finding the DAW with the most stable interactions with the commercial Synths I have and that is a great sequencer and midi sequencing and editing capabilities.
As far as mastering goes Adobe Auditon 3 still suites my needs.
So the Majority seems to be unified around Reaper as the way to go..
Thank you Everyone for participating and for offering your input and kind advice.

Yeah, that's what I meant.
Recording and mixing (without any midi) actually is often enough "music production" where the thing is literally also often being produced, changed, re-written, created, all along the way. But here, in the context of KVR, "music production" most often means "sequencing midi in a daw" because that's what most here do. Context.
But the other thing is also music production.

Thanks for putting it politely so they get it. There are no major studios tracking instruments or vocals with Reason. I can assure you of this.LawrenceF wrote:It's contextual. Sorry, chk071 = Not everyone who has a different opinion than you about Reason is a troll. Hell, if anything, they've probably (and obviously) been around the block enough to form that opinion.
Besides, chk071, anyone who already knows what a major studio is, certainly doesn't need clarification on what one is.

lol...This post is hilarious. Not sure that sentence does much for this guy's "not trolling" case. Reason users are passionate yes. This is because since its inception its gone against the grain and it's brilliant in its ability to encourage its users to make more music. Its the same reason why people call Apple users "cult-like". Any time a company goes against the grain and chooses to fill a specific niche instead of trying to please everyone its going to polarize the public. (BTW, I should mention I'm primarily a Studio One and Samplitude ProX user and also use Windows exclusively.)TACruise wrote:Why do you think I'm trolling? But in the interest of staying on topic, I too have been really impressed with Tracktion 7. Its very stable at least here on windows 10 and the new Gui makes it easy to look at. Its another one also that has a specific workflow but if you get used to the shortcuts, it can be really fast to work with. Same goes for Reaper for that matter, but I suppose its pretty feature-rich if your wanting something more "no nonsense". Anyway, I hope you can wade through all the irrelevant BS in this thread and at least pick up a few good pieces of info. Good luck brother

i've never been one of the 'reason crowd'. i've never understood slavish devotion to any software or equipment of any type - it's what is available and whatever works at the time.

Well most major studios I have been in use only ProTools, so all of the others discussed here are in the same boat now aren't they?TACruise wrote:It's only on the radar of an extremely small handful of people compared to literally every other DAW. Saying Reason is stable in this conversation is like saying a big, red rubber ball used in gym class for kickball is every bit as good to use in a basketball game as an actual basketball.
It's far more attackable on the premise of it having a closed-off plug-in format that is non-transferable or sellable = That makes it a joke, really.
The word you are looking for is proprietary. Any developer can, however, apply and get the SDK to make Rack Extensions so no it is not closed-off.
Your issue really seems to be about not being able to transfer or resell the extensions. I gather that is an issue for some but not all. And just because it is for you does not make it a joke.
But hey you are not going to be convinced by what I or anyone say. The proof, however, is in the pudding. Can you make music with the tools you are using? If so, then fan-f**king-tastic.
If not, and you just like to buy and trade VST's and call other DAW's jokes, then I doubt you are really much of a musician.
That has been my experience with people who act like you do. Hell I have see this in the photography world all the time too. Oh, the Nikon D4s is the best & most advanced modern camera and the Pentax Q7 is just a toy camera. And yet, the person spouting off this nonsense never seems to take any photographs with this supposed better camera and the bloke using the 'toy' Pentax Q7 is taking amazing shots.

I am curious as to why you would consider it slavish devotion if we value a tool we have worked with for some time that gets the job done, has a workflow we like, and it allows us to express our musical creativity?macmurphy wrote:i've never been one of the 'reason crowd'. i've never understood slavish devotion to any software or equipment of any type - it's what is available and whatever works at the time.
Do you move from DAW to DAW and instrument to instrument constantly? I imagine not. I imagine you have one or two DAW's that you know and have worked with more extensively than others. Perhaps it is ProTools? Live? Cubase? Is it slavish devotion if you prefer one of them over any of the others out there?
I use FL Studio and Reason the most. I can and have, however, worked on plenty of others including ProTools, Cubase, Opcode Studio, Studio One, Renoise, and Tracktion. I keep coming back to those first two because I know them well, I like their workflow, and I like what I create when I use them. Reason in particular is a great fit for me because I started out making music with hardware synths and racks full of outboard effects and samplers. I prefer the modularity of Reason. I can recreate some of that with VST's and it is still easier and quicker for me to do more of that in Reason. I don't think it is perfect. There are plenty of things I might like to see added or tweaked. And I will continue to use it for the foreseeable future.

Wow. It never ends with you people. You're completely backing up my point about the strangeness of some in the Reason crowd. You take everything and anything critical said about it personally and are simply extremely fast to be offended and make all kinds of wild assumptions about the person with the critical comments.DJBuddhaBear wrote:Well most major studios I have been in use only ProTools, so all of the others discussed here are in the same boat now aren't they?TACruise wrote:It's only on the radar of an extremely small handful of people compared to literally every other DAW. Even your reply right above mine to the other guy is you taking offense to what he said and making all kinds of wild assumptions.
Lighten up man.
