Hi,

I have this opportunity with a hp compaq nx5000 1.6 GHz centrino laptop, and I'd like to know if I would be able to achieve a decent < 10ms latency on a firewire or USB 2.0 ASIO soundcard, despite the shared video memory (it's an intel Xtreme graphics 2.0 chip).
Do you have positive reports about this kind of setup?

Im running a Acer 1.5 gig centrino with a gig of ram and 40 gig hardrive. I bought the audigy 2 nx USB bundled with the machine and it gives lousy latency. In progs like cubase you need to set it at about 1500 samples before it stops popping and if you do anything that slightly more intensive you need to drop it back to around 2500 samples - which is too much latency in my opinion.

In fruityloops it handles a slightly lower latency but it is far from zero - Im keen to read some reviews of the BCA2000 having just bought the BCR2000 controll surface which is pretty amazing. Other than that firewire motu 828 mark II is the way to go.

does your laptop have shared videos memory, and does your usb audigy have ASIO drivers? is USB 1.1 ou usb 2.0?

The ACER has a 9700 Radeon chip with 64 meg, USB 2.0 (3 ports) and one firewire. The Audigy is alleged to have ASIO support but doesn't really. I bought it to do surround sound theatre sountracks in cubase but it is unable to support the multiple outs - its a problem with the driver. I've tried third party USB audio drivers but on my system they are a little unstable.

Hence the low latency I have to use ye olde multimedia drivers. Some of the crackle and pop I get at low latency is a result of the slow hardrive - 4200 rpm - I am yet to get an ext hardrive - but when using vsti with virtually know harddisk strain latency is still not ideal. Ive done some tweaking and am able to get reasonable latency on a low processor load but if the arrangement gets any more intense I have to drop it back. Compared to my desktop machine that is running the echo darla and 2 gig chip its not that great - but the audigy is a really cheap option.

I use ASIO4all generic drivers on a 1.5 Ghz centrino (but mine has a 64 Mb Radeon 9000) whith no problems at all. Latency goes down to 8 ms or lower easily. The internal card is noisy on input tho. Check ASIO4all (free) here:

Also good results here on my thinkpad r-40 using asio4all with the internal soundmax soundcard. > i set it to 6 ms latency as well it is is very happy and so am I because I can now compose on this laptop using vsits and vsts and then dump the song file into my desktop puters for finishing - the driver cost zip. All I had to do was add an external usb interface and drag a long a controller. A great low cost portable solution.

In order to get it to work I had to unistall the the disable soundmax drivers cos cubase couldn't see past it to enable the asio4all. A good trade off.
