NEW Depeche Mode album "Touring the t-shirt"

So, the modes are in the studio again.
This time with producer James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco.

This bloke might be an excellent engineer. But he is no way that kind of person who has the ability to squeeze the best out of the modes.

As other have concluded in the past (including Alan Wilder). DM needs somebody who pusch them a forward.

In this sense Ford is just anoter Hiller. A nice-to-work-with guy wh oknows how to tweak some knobs.


It was a long time since we heard a realyl well produced album. As a matter fo fact Each album sounds more and more what it is - Martins' demos.

And, ye, he've got Logic and a cool EuroRack with a few thousand modules. So, sure, the demos souns better thwne what the ydid on that old 4 channel Fostex machine back in the days.

But still - far far away from a realyl well produced album.

Fortunately Marti's still a great song writer. And sure, they've made a few god songs over the years.

One of their problems is that they've started to crawl deep up their own arses. Plagiarizing them selfes.

For the last couple of albums they've been returning to their "electronic roots".

That's pretty funny considerign all the effort they spent on getting away from that analog sound of Speak & Spell and A Broken Frame.

ITheir trademark used to be the sample based sound.

So, now they're back in the studio with Martins' collection of Speak & Spell syntths plus this disco guy Ford.

And for those still wishing Wilder be back in the band. Ford is a strong indication that he wont return this time either.

A hones tname for their next toru would be: "Touring the T-shirt".

I agree, some of the songs are pretty good but the production is going downhill. With all that gear I guess there's still a great deal of effort in producing a good sounding album. Maybe there's not enough money in it anymore. It seems to be the case for The Who's frontman:

Dunno if it's "on topic" or not, but they've been showing a lot of "soul savers" on MTVhd lately (jools and other) and I like it.

Anyways, DM has been something I've always liked quite a bit (though not an "number one" fan)

One might wonder what their real ambitions are?

Are they sort of obilgated to put out an album in order to sell/promote the comming tour. An the tours . are they more or less all aobut selling t.shirts? After all most songs the yplay on tournowdays are the old clasics. Becase that's what the fans want ot hear.

Martin is sitll a great wong writer and ave is an amazing stage performer.

But what are their ambitions with Depeche Mode?

Thee is potentil within the band. They jus tnot capable of squeezing it otu themselfes. They've tried to do so over th last couple of albums.

One must realize tha tthe band who put out Black Celebration, Music For The MAsses, Violator and Songs Of Faith And Devotion was a completely other band then today's DM.

Still Martin's songs , yes. But they where then produced, arrenged, orchestrated by Alan Wilder, Daniel Miller, Gareth Jones, Steve Lyon and Flood.


The band knows that. Again . it's that old band's stuff the fans wanna hear on the tours.

So with James Ford (and certinal yno Alan Wilder) , another Bill Hiller ype, what are their real ambitions? To sell t-shirts?

But as for DM, I've liked their stuff over the years up to Ultra. Haven't really listened to them since then so I'm not sure what they're at. Martin's MG album from last year had some good stuff on it.

MG is good but it's kind of forgettable, I listen to it once in a while. I much prefer Plaid new album which at least sounds good.

MG sounds pretty much what it is . home.made. Just like DM's few latest albums.

Delta Machine was said, by the band, to be a mix between Violator and SOFAD.

well, that's a pretty ridiculous comparison.

JWith James Ford they'll mor elikel ymake a new Delta Machine then a SOFAD or a Violator.

I would prefer Vince Clarke behind the desk, the Gore/Clarke album is a modern classic IMO
