I am interested in knowing people opinions on running their systems 24/7.

Lately I have just been leaving my system on all the time and I was curious as to what most of you did.

I have heard it's less stress on the computer if you just leave it on.

any opinions?

I only shut down for system upgrades or vacations...

i leave mine on most of the time.. but since its so hot in here at night i've been turning it off.

no harm in leaving it on 24/7

I have to shut mine down with lightning storm fears. My other machine I just leave on 24/7 and have for over 2 years. Do what works best for you.

2 years!! that´s a long time

i also shut mine down at night because there´s simply no need to keep it running through the night. (i sleep at night, so i think my daw could also )

Ya, it's been down a handful of times, like when I moved it to another room, and to flip in a different video card a couple of times. Otherwise, it's always on. Never crashes either, which I'm quite happy about.

I run my DAW 24/7, it's Windows 2000 and it's been rock-stable for me. My last shutdown (not just a reboot after installing security updates) was 6 months ago to install a DVD burner. I have a nice UPS on it so power surges, brownouts etc. don't get through.

I hear it's better to let it run if you can, although I have no hard evidence myself to prove that. For sure it makes it easier to just jump up and get to work if I get inspired!

..but not with IBM/Hitachi harddrives, as they suggest to not let them powered on longer as 8 hours a day or 330h/month... and this is serious, i know 3 mates whose hd's just totally f**ked up because they let them run the whole week...

I turn it off every time I'll be out for at least 3 hours, and at night too.

Anyway unless you're a p2p junky what's the point to leave it on at night or when you're not home

Also Raven you're right about the power consumption but you forget one thing : how is this energy produced? It is very different if it comes from nuclear, fossil, or wind/ocean/earth/sun.
Also per se the CO2 emission isn't that much a problem, but the fact that it exceeds the capacity of the oceans and forrest to catch it.

btw cars and their industrial appendices are much more responsible for the atmospheric pollution than the electricity one consumes everyday, and the way one votes (or doesn't) may very well influence this too...

If you've got an old bicycle you don't use anymore, you can still recycle it and turn it into a generator for your puter, it'll even help you getting rid of that fat around your belly

I don't say for a server, but for a desktop pc?
Well, SETI project or similar, some heavy graphics or animation rendering, heavy duty rendering in general, things like that, but else?

Your computers must either be really slow to bootup or you are extremely lazy people. When i'm not using my computer for longer than half hour I will turn it off.

Whats the harm in waiting an extra 20 - 30 seconds for your computer to bootup and shutdown? It seems like the rest of the world keeps their computers on all the time

EDIT: just timed it and mine boots up in 45 seconds...a bit longer than 20 - 30 but i still don't understand.

Also if you are running it 24/7 with SETI and rendering going on, you are likely to reduce the lifetime of your pc as these apps will take 100% of your cpu time up all the time.
