How to make that sound...

Begins at 1:30

I just saw a post on reddit where someone was asking help for creating this patch on Massive. i don't really like Massive, and thought about creating it on Zebra, just for fun. I thought that it was a simple patch: a saw, some filtering, a vibrato modulated by velocity, a little bit of pitch envelope (not so sure about this part), a touch of reverb and delay.... And I totally failed.

:dog:

So, if someone can shed some light, I would be real happy :tu:

Well, you didn't mention on which part you feel you failed, so it'd be a shot in the dark. But since you didn't mention multiple oscillators, that's worth looking at. I think I hear three saws, spread across 3 octaves. Play with their relative volume, and relative phase until the texture sounds right. Else, I agree with the elements you've mentioned, including the pitch envelope for the attack.

Outa curiousity, what reddit? I've yet to browse reddit for music production related stuff, don't know what's out there yet.

Post

The main lead, that repeats the whole track!

Post

I interpret your post to mean emulate the patch that weaves in at 1:30, intermittently. But what I mean is what part of your sound design wasn't sounding correct. Though I realize that's difficult to describe.

So did the octaved saws work?

Post

I will try later and post it here! the original sound has some analog-ish and pluck-ish feel with a sharp attack, what I got is clearly digital and doesn't have the same... character. But maybe Zebra is not indicated at all for this kind of sound? (but I doubt this, to be honest!). Hey, I just woke up now, I will try the 3 saws and answer about reddit on 1 hour or 2. :tu:

Post

Yes, with the 3 saws it sounds better MOK19, thank you!

It's not yet there, cause I can't make the envelope right... Or it's the phase that is not quite right yet? :(

About reddit, I found the question on r/sounddesign. about production and synths, I like r/synthesizers, r/edmproduction and r/advancedproduction. r/truehouse and r/truetechno are good placed to get recommendation on tracks. Steve Duda answer some things about Serum once in a while too.

Hi, the vid in post#1 is blocked in germany, so here a working link:

@walter that's already close IMHO.

From your attempt you seem to be missing the Pitch Env that the original has (a very short negative pitch attack, i.e. it starts out a bit lower and very quickly snaps into place). Also, Fatima Yamaha plays the lead live from around 24 minutes in this set:

You can tell he plays it on some Yamaha synth or other, the people in this Dutch forum seem to think it's a Yamaha DX-100, which is an FM synth. So maybe you have the wrong approach here? Try using Dexed VST or something. http://www.synthforum.nl/forums/showthread.php?t=190927

The best that I can do for now in Zebra (almost nails, but there's something yet missing). I'm not good on FM Synthesis, someday I will try this on Dexed.

Noticed this thread online whilst searching around this synth sound so thought I would take the time to register and leave my take on it.

3 saw waves, short release, bit of delay and as someone else points out there is a little ramp to the pitch, not possible with the Minilogue XD but I think you'll agree this is pretty close.

This Vital Preset is pretty close
Make it unison with detune between 1-3 in each osc and it really livens up the sound but the original sounded mono so left it like that
