How far have computers come in the last 5 years? For DAW usage?

What can be done now as far as loading plugins and working with large sample libraries that could not be done 5 years ago?

How about the windows and Mac OS?

Any specific details?

New OS-es are more bloated and made for portable devices in mind, but nothing changed drastically, give it another 5 years at least.

Devolution or steady-state at best...

- Moore's law seems to be breaking down
- Apple laptops/minis are no longer user-serviceable and there's still really no off-the-shelf Windows machine sure to work reliably with at low latencies letalone ThunderBolt/FireWire
- 64 bit has let developers get really lazy with memory management
- On the bright side, Bitwig and Renoise support Linux

I would say a lot have happened in the last 5 years:

In 2011 4GB RAM was passable, now that number is 16GB

Processors like i5 are now within reach for most budgets.

SSD's back in 2011 wasn't so common, as they where expensive. Now most pockets can afford them. For example, I just ordered a 256GB SSD for just $65.

So users have got a lot more bang for their bucks when it comes to computer power, which of course benefits DAW usage.

Software has become more bloated and many developers have taken for granted the seemingly endless speed boosts of the early 2000s and have given anyone that can't afford i7s the middle finger by designing software that won't be able to run on current processors for about 5 years, by which time they'll design software that can't run on those processors, either.

They cost the same as 5 years ago today.

They didn't got that much more and prices are still the same.

Took that in consideration when I said it, had a look at the prices, was in the market for a machine back than and know the prices of everything and exchange rate, it's the same like today, HDD are cheaper, but they were expensive at one point too after some flood, SSD's too, everything else is there.

But that's just maybe case over here, could be.

More bloated software across the board, more telemetry eatting resources, any gain we saw in hardware got was lost in 90% of software imo.

But still, XP is slimmer than any, it's classic Apple case, 10.6.8 was slim, than they made next ones worst and now they can barely reach 10.6.8 level again, same as Windows, XP is still slim king, 10 may be better than rest of them, but there's whole concept of it makes it just wrong turn into to the future, at least for some of us, so yeah.

No way i would want back to XP after using Vista, 7, 8, 10, simply any OS which came after. If you want a slim OS, try Ubuntu Linux. But be prepared to install a lot of stuff for things you can do with a Windows, or Mac system per default, without any additional installations. The simple reason that these OS's feel more "bloated" is because they already come with lots of things you'd have to install on a "slim" OS, for simple to more advanced tasks.
