Ok, so I'm just a dummy... :) call me what you will, I don't care anymore... LOL

what I don't quite understand is the loading of wav's into the OSC's from 1 to 6

It seems that if I use an existing patch as a starting point, then go look in any active OSC, it will have a wav loaded... ok good so far, but then if I go to the first unused OSC and want to load there a different wav, that new different wav also becomes loaded to all the first already used OSC's...

I was assuming that I could load a diff wav into serveral OSC's... is this not so?

as you can see, I'm more than a little confused.. and then further what about loading wav's that are not included in the preset sets??? say just a wav that I've made... how do I get one of those into an osc slot???

I know you guys are far and deep into Rhino, but I'm only beginning to 'program' it... been happy just use the banks so far but want to more along...

thanks for any help and guidance on this basic question. :-o

Max,

I think that User wav 1 is user wave 1 for all of Rhino, not just in that patch? So if you change user wav 1 for one, it's changed for all.

It would be nice if the custom waves were per patch instead of globally.

You're not clear but let's assume that you are working with additive page. On that page you can load up to 6 different single cycle additive waves. Once those waves are loaded you click on any Osc tab and select any of the 6 User Waves by clicking on the triangle next to the wave name in the Oscillator Shape box and selscting User Wave 1-6. So, if each Osc has User Wave 1 loaded, changing User Wave 1 on the additive page will indeed change every Osc using that wave. Be sure that the volume of the wave is more than 0 in the RAW (Output)or you will hear nothing.

The other waveforms available respond like most other hardware and software synths; selecting one loads it into that osc only. Again, be sure the volume is turned on. If you send it to one of the filters be sure that the Filter Mode box displays something other than OFF. You may have to adjust the Cutoff to hear output, also.

Your best bet when learning a complex synth is to select an interesting patch and play with different parameters to find out how they change the sound. I'll be here to answer any question that arise.

ah ha many thanks Daniel, now I got the idea! You see my confusion was not understanding that the osc shape is where you load the various waves for each osc... because if I right clk on any OSC tab [above] it shows a patch name, which I was assuming incorrectly was where one could change the loaded wav file... [NOT!].. and further selecting any other item with a rt clk on an OSC tab loads that patch across all the OSC's. Now I understand things much better...including where you can load the 6 user defined wavs [from the ADD tab, eh?] Ok ... lovely.

thanks again for you kind help. :)

To clarify (or further add to the confusion...) : "User wav" oscillators are defined in the additive tab. They are defined "per patch". Such oscillators are single cycle, and are defined using harmonics and phase. It's also possible to import a single-cycle, 16 bits mono wav file into the additive editor, and let Rhino convert it to harmonics/phase information.

"External wavs" are a new feature in Rhino 2, and work just like the other oscs. Basically, you provide a .txt file with split information and a list of .wav files, and presto ! there's a new waveform available in Rhino menus.

Hey Tick,

I'm glad you mentioned this!

It's a great feature, but I think a utility that would eliminate the need to have to create a text file would be a BOON to many users.

I'm no programmer, so for all I know it would take forever to write, but I can observe that if you make the process "transparent" more people are likely to use it, and it would become even more attractive.

Not a criticism - just a thought. :)

i believe that Wm.K has developed something along these lines for his new effort , 'Wusikstation' ...

it would be great :) if there if there was some kind of script generator for multi samples

could some java util be made by some clever guy :?:

It's on the todo list :-)

that would really open thing up

respect for Dan for all that manual script editing, sample start points etc.
