External Audio Interface help

Hello everyone,
I'm a beginning music producer, of mainly progressive house, electro house and more EDM styles. I find myself in a position where I want to upgrade my sound, but I cannot decide how to. I read via Google about something called an "External Audio Interface". I'm willing to give it a try, since it should make my production sound a lot better, since I just use a mediocre laptop for music producing. But I do have a few questions about these things...
Will my DELL laptop be able to run both FL Studio 12, my MIDI-keyboard AND the audio interface thing? I'm not very informed about computers and their capacity.
Can I expect the sound in my headphones to be better? Also when listening to music outside of FL Studio?
My sound sometimes studders when I play an entire composition in FL Studio, but when I turn off a few layers it works fine. If I buy one of those External Audio Interfaces will that happen less soon? (A person on a Dutch music production website said it would, but it seems a bit weird to me)
Thank you very much in advance for reading my post and potentially responding to it.

Thank you very much for your message.
I have one additional question though...
Do most Interfaces work with USB or something else? Laptops don't have infinite ports and I'm afraid I'm using alot of them already... And will it affect the quality of sound?

Most interfaces use USB 2.0 unless they're for Mac, which often uses Firewire or Lightning.
It is important to connect your interface directly to fastest port you have.
If you plan to extend your studio, you will need USB hub sooner or later - use it for generic peripherals and MIDI controllers.
