Should I update? Cubase Vst 5.1 to SX - Who can help?

I need good help.

I´m using Cubase vst 5.1 now for 2 years as my main sequenzer.
I´m asking here, because I think demoing is not the same as really working and going deep inside a prog.

I´m on a P4 3,06 HT and use Win XP home.
my audiocards is the M-audio audiophile 2496.

My questions:

What are the improvements by upgrading?
Is SX lighter or heavier on CPU?
How does freezing work?
How are the internal wave editing features?
Can you run Vst 5.1 and SX on one PC ( not neccesarily at the same time)?
Are there any important bugs?
How are the internal FX compared to vst 5.1?
I also use energy XT, do they both go together well?
Is it more or less conveniet to work with SX?.
Is the soundquality improved?

I need much slots for vst instruments, and I do a bit of recording, (voice, guitar synth).

My main wishes:
to improve cpu usage with vst instruments (I know freezing)
to get midi editing and sound editing easier done.
to improve soundquality

Any shared experiences might be helpful,
since I´m on a budget and can go only for real improvements.

cheers

Stephan

It only works for VSTi's - and it's dead sloooooooooow.
Very easy to use though. Just hit the Freeze/unfreeze button in the instruments rack.

Of course.

Sure. I only have trouble with the Preset generator and some plug-ins, but that isn't Cubase related methinks.

Sure. SX runs on WinXP and it's VERY stable compared to VST on Win98SE.

I dunno, but I think they ditched TrueTape. You oughta check that, though, I'm not sure.

They've added the multiband compressor from the Mastering Edition.

The latest SX2 version has 2 new VSTi's and a filter effect.

Ok these are the additions, but how is the quality of them all?

It can´t be worth to buy just for these bits, or can it?

Well, if all the MIDI editing capbilities are kosher with you, then go for it. Do realize though that now you're paying full price for the upgrade since they just canned the 'upgrade' price scheme on July 31st. I never used VST, I started with SX1 about a year and a half ago. I love it. Still, I've noticed Auxbuss pointing out things they screw up or take away, or add that people don't want. It really comes down to your workflow and what's important to you. It's that piece we can't answer without you playing with the demo a lot.

Oh yes, I forgot about all the emitted functionality...

There's a lot less preferences, too...

But I'm convinced Steinberg will get this sorted in some future release.

One thing I really hate is that you can't have the Inspector treat parts on the same track individually. E.g., you can't transpose the second part on a track without transposing each and every part on that track.

Like DevonB said, try the demo and hear for yourself!

Oh, and the way Cubase handles its audio recordings has improved greatly, enabling Cubase to offer unlimited undo's!

I just did the upgrade. still coming to terms on the new look and the way it operates. Overall though, I'm quite pleased with it and despite temptation over the last weekend, I've not opened vst 5 since.
a1's not a bad synth either!

"Just" as in within the past few days/week?

I thought the upgrade was temporarily officially UNAVAILABLE pending the release of SX3.

I thought 7/31 was the last day to update.

I ordered it on the 30th (from Steinberg website), got it on Aug 5

I upgraded to SL, since SX was out of my price range and SL was already more powerful than 5.1. Absolutely no regrets. I retired all other sequencers I was using, and now thats all I use. I like the interface quite a bit and feel rather comfortable. It is a slightly different beast though, which takes a little bit of learning to figure out.

Oh, okay... so you made it just in the nick of time. Apparently there was a mention of the deadline on cubase.net but no official communication or notification from Steinberg via email or postcard (e.g. no mention in their email newsletter).

I gave up on Cubase.net a long time ago...
