New to 64 Bit

I installed Reaper 64 bit on Windows 7 64 bit and I accepted the default location. The default turned out o be C: Program Files. Is this correct or should it be installed to Program Files (x86)? It does open as is.

Also; A Tech at Native Instruments suggested that I make 2 different folders for VSTs and locate them on the C: Drive named _VST32 and _VST64.

Program files (x86) folder is the "32 bit" default folder, while Program Files is the "64 bit" default folder

So Reaper installed in the best place by default

You need to have separate folders for 32 and 64 bit plugs, so it can be done like that yes.

Just note that when installing VST's they often choose the Steinberg folder by default, so you will in case need to set the path of the installer manually so that they end up in the folder where you want them.

Some plugs will want to install 32x & 64x versions,that's why you need two separate folders,point reaper to the 64x folder only,I have them set up like this.

Yeah, i also set up both 32-bit and 64-bit plugin folders. A few plugins won't let you choose which version to install, but install both. I don't have the 32-bit folder set up in my 64-bit hosts as a plugin folder though, so it doesn't look in there anyway.

Thanks for the responses. I have been successful adding VSTs to both folders and Reaper finds them. I did make the other folders as you mentioned but so far I only use the two VST folders. I guess this works well enough but if you find time to explain or give a few examples of items you put in the other folders I would learn more how you do things. I do know setting up correct file management when dealing with Audio Recording DAW software is a big key to success. Besides switching over to 64 bit I am also having to get acquainted with a 2 drive system. All programs are installed on the C: Solid State Drive and I'm putting all data that I can on the bigger but slower Hard Drive.

I think my setup is pretty simple compared to most. I have AmpliTube 4, Kontakt 5, Replika Delay, Midi Guitar 2, Mobius Looper along with other VSTs that automatically showed up probably coming for my Focusrite USB 2i2 install and also from the Reaper install. All of these items are in _VST64 DLL and some are also in _VST32 DLL.

I do have some sound libraries that work inside of Kontakt 5 that I will also need to deal with.

The DLL Folders i use are for vst that don't need to be installed or have no installer,their portable you could say & its easy to back up the whole folder or move the whole folder to a new system that way.

The plugs folder is for installed plugins like your Kontakt,Replika etc.

Your Kontakt libraries should be able to go on the second drive with out any issues.

Just need to go into preferences in Kontakt and specify which location Kontakt should look for sample libraries

Thanks, I will be setting up Kontakt 5 today or tomorrow and that will help. I keep a Word Doc going on all of my Audio programs so that it gets easier but I always find some extra notes to add like this one. It has taken me about 6 days to get back to having my computer just they way I like. Hopefully now that I'm using a Image Backup with the new OS I won't have to reinstall and redo the settings for everything in the future. I'm bragging but my last computer "HAL" lasted for 9 years this month.

I haven't had any problems with having them both in the same folder, as long as they have unique names. Either way, it's probably redundant to keep both.
