Hi Guys,
I've been sitting on the fence on upgrading from SX 1.x -> SX2 as me G4 barely meets the specs.
Is this just Cubase VST to SX or should I take the plunge as Arbiter.co.uk still has some left?
Thanks guys and sorry if this has been covered before.
Cheers,
Dave
I know Im a bit late in the game but if you wouldnt mind filling me in a bit please?Liondream wrote:"Just" as in within the past few days/week?
I thought the upgrade was temporarily officially UNAVAILABLE pending the release of SX3.
I thought 7/31 was the last day to update.

The 'announcement' I saw only mentioned Cubase 5.1.
Tough call as to whether you should upgrade... what if you upgrade and the new one comes out a week later? I know most software companies have a grace period for such situations.
Best might be to call Steinberg.

There is a very interesting thread about Cubase SX that you may find very useful. There seem to be a number of Cubase SX users commenting on their usage of the programme...
http://www.kvr-vst.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=51437
I think it is a superb thread.

The upgrade that has stopped is only from any VST version (5.1 or less) to SX. You can still upgrade from SX1 -> SX2. You can still upgrade if you can find somewhere that has the upgrade packs in stock - but once those packs have gone, that seems to be it. Steinberg have said there will be no more upgrades released from VST -> SX. It is only while stocks last. (Actually I'm still waiting for mine to be delivered locally from the shop's HQ
....at least I know I'm safe though.)
It was a difficult choice - I loved VST5.1 - it was so quick and intuitive for the way I work (mostly), but the thing that really clinched it for me was the loss of upgrade - if you don't upgrade very soon, then, as stated already, you will have to pay full price for SX2. I paid NZ$527 for the upgrade. A brand new SX2 costs around maybe $1200-1300. Even if SX3 is released tomorrow and I decide to upgrade, I will still have saved cash.
And if you upgrade to SX2, you will most likely still have a few years before any further upgrade path is removed. There is no rush to upgrade to SX3 at all. Whereas if you stuck with 5.1, you'd have to pay the full price on SX2 or SX3 or SX4 or whichever version you finally decide to go to. I'll probably not upgrade again until 2 or 3 versions later. Always wait and see how the first beta testers get on with it (i.e all buyers of SX1
).
So....no pressure mate, but if you wait too long to upgrade, you'll spend a whole heap more money, unless you are content to remain on VST5.1 for ever.

Kritikon... the Steinberg guys I'm in touch with told me that the 5.1 to SX upgrade WILL return as soon as SX3 comes out.
Where did you get your info? Just trying to figure out what the options are...

Christianmusikmaker... that other thread you mentioned just made my stomach turn and my head spin. Yipes!
You know... when I think back... I started doing a HECK of a lot less music and a lot more personal IT after I picked up VST.
Granted, I think the results have been a lot better, but still...
Well... at least this these threads did have one benefit for me. I am that much closer to spending the money on the Sonar upgrade instead.

Really...? Which version of Sonar have you got now and which upgrade are you likely to get?Liondream wrote: Christianmusikmaker... that other thread you mentioned just made my stomach turn and my head spin. Yipes! Midi timing issues... maybe MIDI just hasn't been around long enough for them to figure it out. Seemed okay on my Atari EIGHTEEN years ago!

Well the Lexicon has been hyped up pretty much but had a very lukewarm reception from many Sonar users...so I would not upgrade for that. I think the Studioverb2 that ships with Project 5 is better than that.Liondream wrote:v2 going to v3 Producer.
Seems like a much better value taking into account the Lexicon and the Ultrafunk plugs.
What do you guys think?
I use Pristine Space (Voxengo) which is probably one of the best reverbs out there.http://www.voxengo.com/pspace/
Ultrafunk is another matter altogether and is a superb collection of plugs that are very highly rated.
I use the full version of Vsampler (VST/DXI/Standalone/rewire)not the DXI only version that ships with Sonar 3 producer. Either way this sampler is massive in every way.
I comes with its own reverb, delay e.t.c and is crammed with features.
I think you will love it.

Well, the reason I brought up the whole 7/31 deadline issue is that you may no longer even be able to upgrade. You may have to start all over, so that's point 1.
You will need to check with your local Steinberg source to be 100% sure. Seems like we've heard conflicting information as to whether the upgrade option is gone for good or whether it will return with the immanent release of v3.
Another thought is that if you own something else you may be able to get a crossgrade instead (if the upgrade is no longer).
I've worked with SX and seen it at a couple studios that I deal with - mainly at the local Club Cubase meetings where the regional rep attends, so I answer the ones I feel confident that I can, some based on what my friends have been saying...

What are the improvements by upgrading?
Is SX lighter or heavier on CPU?
************Much more efficient
How does freezing work?
How are the internal wave editing features?
************Much more advanced
Can you run Vst 5.1 and SX on one PC ( not neccesarily at the same time)?
************I think so.
Are there any important bugs?
************Um, it's Cubase, of course there are!!! With each new version things get added, things get fixed, things get removed, things get inadvertantly broken. The first update alone contained about 200 bug fixes. But overall it works well except for some workarounds as mentioned in the other thread. A LOT more stable than the 5.1 public beta of the week desperate attempt at trying to make the thing work as advertised.
How are the internal FX compared to vst 5.1?
*************Some are the same with a new skin. Perhaps internal tweaks? Added some midi fx too. SX adds the Waldorf A1 synth. Terribly underrated imo. Not sure about this one, but I think Magneto is now included?
I also use energy XT, do they both go together well?
Is it more or less conveniet to work with SX?.
***************God yes...much more convenient and transparent. I would say it fulfills the promise made with 5.1 Things actually make sense now and are more flexible. The automation is much improved.
Is the soundquality improved?
***************Makes 5.1 sound like muddy crap. Very dramatic improvement imo.
I need much slots for vst instruments, and I do a bit of recording, (voice, guitar synth).
***************I think it has slots for 32 instruments?
My main wishes:
to improve cpu usage with vst instruments (I know freezing)
to get midi editing and sound editing easier done.
to improve soundquality
Any shared experiences might be helpful,
since I´m on a budget and can go only for real improvements.

I'm going only on what the Steinberg site says. There was a mention that "there may be some upgrade options in the future" but reading between the lines, I felt that it may be only an upgrade to a cut down version of Cubase - SL or something like that. I could be wrong of course, but personally I wasn't prepared to take that risk. And it seems to be an ever increasing policy with some s/w firms that there is only a finite number of years with upgrade options - you can only upgrade to the next product irrespective of which version, but not a leap over 2 actual products.Kritikon... the Steinberg guys I'm in touch with told me that the 5.1 to SX upgrade WILL return as soon as SX3 comes out.

I hope I'm not wrong, because then I'll have shelled out needlessly when I could maybe have upgraded straight from VST to SX3. But it's probably not too far in the foreseeable future when audio hosts go to 64bit - which I would imagine would mean a complete new program. And the odds are that they won't see an upgrade from a 2001 product to a complete new 2005 product as being viable economically.
And business sense would dictate most likely that they won't reinstate the VST-> SX3 upgrade option. OK so they might lose a small proportion of business to users that decide to go to a different host instead, but this way they gain the VST->SX2 upgrade business, and then the SX?->whatever is the next Cubase product. And the plain fact is that when you've spent several years getting used to a certain host and the way it works, you're far less likely to want to learn a completely different host, so they won't lose much business that way.
Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but the money men aren't likely to relent and reprovide a VST->SX3 upgrade it seems to me.
