Up till now Ive been using Battery kicks which have been great for dance. Now I'm getting into hiphop style beats I'm struggling to find good samples. Their 909s and similar dont seem to have enough depth - not solid enough. I dont know if it's just mixing practices or a quality factor.
So firstly, what do you think of Battery kicks?
And who has better?

Ive tried Modern Beats (Kolossal Kicks) but I find a lot of them unusable because they have so much crap on the tails like rattles and extra noise.
The battery ones tend to accentuate the click too much so when you add compression, they sound thin.

Listening to recorded music from such artists as Cashmere Cat I realize I cant match them in the kick department with a lot of their 909 style, deep thudding kicks. So would appreciate recommendations of the very best samples out there atm.

Best 909 style samples I have would be some JoMox MBase samples from the SEMC Super Analog Kicks library. It should still be out there somewhere. The MBase was basically a hardware emulation of the 909 kick with added control parameters.

Also consider using dedicated kick synths - Drzewo Korzenie Kick is a good free one, there are various TR-909 emulations out there, and the full deluxe option would be the new D16 Punchbox which has 606, 808 and 909 emulations, a non-vintage kick synth that's very flexible, a ton of various kick samples and also layering and effects to build really huge kicks.

Try the Markus Hakala kicks library: a 1000 kicks, all key labeled and in a huge variety from soft to deep to pumping loud. Oh and it's free, just Google it.

Also free is one of the best kick synths I know: BigroomKixsynth, which despite it's name can create just about every type and style of kick you ever want. I use it in all my projects and many times I don't even need any further processing or fx.

Yeah, I've used it in a lot of projects too - a great fast and easy way to get a good (not necessarily big room) kick. It doesn't really do accurate vintage style kicks, but other than that it's great.
