I'm not sure if this has come up before:

A few surprises.

I don't think they've actually measured the singers full range possible, just the range they've showcased throughout recordings.

Let me get it out of the way; "Range" doesn't necessarily equal "good singer" :hihi:

Some surprises there, both at the top [/i]and[/i] bottom end...

For sure, personally I was surprised how far down Freddy was, and how far up Roger Waters is. But, they're all people with huge ranges... they're all professional singers after all. I'm a trained singer and can probably only do 2 octaves and a bit.

I feel ya, man. Only difference is I'm not a trained vocalist.

Maybe it doesn't count falsetto, only "proper singing" :hihi:

Yes, when Bob Dylan places as having a better range than Aretha Franklin, and Anthony Keidis is slightly ahead of David Bowie, they're (understandably) omitting things like pitch control, intonation, and timbre across the range.

Well, I think the OP admitted the relative worth of such classifications in his first post.

That said, the issue of range has other considerations. In the world of Opera, for example, the 'division of labor' allows the greats to reach notes usually not heard in popular music.

For example the great German bass Kurt Moll as Sarastro performing Mozart's 'O Isis und Osiris' from the Magic Flute.

And, at the other end, Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez in Donizetti's 'Pour Mon Ame' from La Fille Du Regiment (which apparently impressed the Italian audience so that he had to do an encore).

I doubt there's ever been a human capable of singing like that from F2 to C5...
