Having a problem setting up Aria Player (multi, 32 out) in Reaper 4.

When I create a new instrument track with Aria Player (for using GIO) I get the usual routing confirmation dialogue to which I say "yes" to have Reaper build the relevant stereo outputs.

If I then load up an ensemble in theplayer it sets itself up with different Midi channels but all the audio is routed to the 1/2 channel in the player - which comes out on the main track in Reaper.

From the Options menu I can create 16 midi tracks which I presume correspond to the 16 available sample slots in the player but then I get stuck. I can only ever get sound from the first loaded slot. And I confess I'm stuck. I've searched and tried suggestions from the Reaper forum and the Reaper documentation but I just can't seem to get a result - being able to load up one instance of the VST and route 16 midi channels into it to get 16 channels of different sound out.

I even set everything up manually using this tutorial: http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=4088 but no luck.

In Sonar X1 Trial which I installed yesterday I worked it out in about 5 minutes flat but Reaper has got me totally stumped and I've been using it for ages, but I'm fairly new to multi-timbral stuff.

Any help would be much appreciated

I don't know if I follow because I don't have that plug. But usually if you've done those steps, the next step is to get the plug in parameters correct. For example, in kontakt or omnisphere, you have to go in and change the stereo outputs in the plugin. Then you save as a template.

However, if it's easier in sonar, I'm stumped. Usually I have a much more difficult time in sonar.

Check the output routing in Aria.

btw I feel your pain, output routing in Reaper is baffling to a newcomer. Good thing is, once you get a single multi-out setup you can save it as a template and just swap out the plugin.

Thank you Hibidy and Arglebargle,

Done a whole pile of messin' about with the ARIA player this evening and finally got everything as I wanted it. The main thing was making sure that the MIDI tracks were both armed and set to be monitored.

I now have two nice new shiny templates - one with all the sample slots outputting to one stereo pair and one with each slot having it's own stereo output. Happy to share the templates if any one wants them.

One thing to note regarding the 16 channel set-up - the ARIA Player appears to send its effects out on Channel 1/2 so even when you have everything routed correctly you'll still get signal (reverb tails?) on your first output track - only took an hour or so to work out what was happening. Disable ARIA's internel effects (which is a shame because they're very good) and the extra sound goes away.

Anyway, 'tis working. Thanks for the help and pointing me in the right direction.

Or, load up to 15 instruments into Aria Player, routing them to outputs 3+4 onwards, leaving 1+2 for the Reverbed output.

That's what I do in Miroslav Philharmonik (every instrument there has a Send to CSReverb, output to 1+2).

Thanks DarkStar, hadn't thought of doing that. Will mean I can at least keep using the ARIA player's very nice convolution reverb. Well, off to make template #3 :)

How can I download the reaper/multi-timbral VST template? I have tried everything. I am trying to use Reaper v5.17 with Rapidcomposer v3.3 and Aria player multi and have been going nowhere. Also what does the routing matrix in Reaper look like?

There are lots of user-developed templates scattered round the reaper forum.

But you don't need them. try this:
  • (a) right-click in the Track Control Panel (TCP) area below any existing tracks,
    (b) select "Insert virtual instrument on new track",
    (c) select the VSTi,
    (d) click [Yes] on the "Build Routing confirmation" window; that will create tracks for all of the audio outputs from the VSTi,
    (e) open the FX window for the VSTi track (click the [fx] button),
    (f) select [Options] >> "Build 16 channel of MIDI routing to this track",
    (g) disable RecArm on the VSTi track.
Now you will have 16 tracks sending MIDI (on channels 01 ... 16 respectively) to the VSTi and several tracks for the audio outputs from the VSTi. If you do not need separate MIDI input tracks, omit steps (e) ... (g)

Within the VSTi, load your instruments and set the routing for each one - receiving MIDI on a particular MIDI channel AND sending its audio to a particular audio output pair; depending on the VSTi you may need to do some additional configuration work within the VSTi itself (e.g. to create / enable the output channels).

Back in Reaper, name your MIDI tracks for their destination instruments and add the MIDI. Name the audio tracks too. Colour the tracks as you wish. SAVE them all as a Track Template.

To see the Routing Matrix, click [View] and select "Routing Matrix". Details are in the User Guide.

tricky way is enabling thefeedback looping and routing back the audio to the original MIDI source track
