It's always fun to join an OSC, and this month was no different. Every time I finish a song for this competition I realize I learned several new tricks.
Thanks for all you, mates.

You think lower scores are because people hate you?!?! That's absurd. This is a high end competition with many, many very strong composer/producers. The OSC is very demanding -- the top finishers have creative composition, great sound design, and great production. Once you enter a piece you're subject to the same standards of voting as everyone else. I scored you a 2, and it's not because I hate you -- it had to do with your composition, sound design and production sound as compared to everyone else's.wagtunes wrote:Well, this confirms it. I've had numerous people tell me that this was my best entry. Some called it epic. And yet, not counting my own vote, I got 7 1s.bjporter wrote:Preliminary results: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... pFJvAxwnnQ

And 30 2s.
Really?
Those are the 37 people who hate my guts, which is why I'm done with these.
Adios amigos.
The OSC is demanding and the bar is very high. I too would love to score higher, but wherever I place in the competition, I enjoy the creative process, and the listening, commenting and learning.
The OSC provides an even playing field. It doesn't matter if you're new at this or an old timer (like me, you and Doctor Bob -- sorry DB, if calling you an old timer offends you!). Some participants are students or just starting out and others may be pros with many years of experience. But everyone puts their best out there, and it's a creative, respectful community. To my mind, this is very special, and it provides a great creative outlet that does not carry the baggage of "real work".
If you only care about winning, the OSC may not be for you. However, if you want to engage with a remarkably talented group of composer/producers who are willing to share advice, comment on our works, and keep reaching for more creative work product and better production, this is a GREAT place to be.

ontrackp I take advantage of your reply (which I agree almost totally) to share my point of view on the OSC, some thoughts after only 3 months I tried it, so I may change my point of view later.ontrackp wrote: The OSC is demanding and the bar is very high. But so far it seems to me that the competitive side of the challenge always brings the same results. Surely the winners deserve their scores, I have no doubts about that. But I feel sorry for those who will never win or score high just because their creativity and skills do not match the trend of what it's supposed to be a great electronic music track.
Yes to win is not the point, I agree, but apparently still we have winners and losers. And that's like a shadow
on some aspects of the creativity exposed here. I hope that my words would not sound negative, I meant them as a hint to widen the appreciation of the many sides of creativity.

Let me congratulate the winners. As you know my bet was on Meakaale.
ontrackp is right. Making music in the OSC maybe the hardest way to make music.
Nobody hates you Steven.

If anyone goes in to OSC with the mindset to win or score high points then I am sure that person will be disappointed. Everyone want to win of course but like in sports or any other competition there are those who have more talent and work harder. I want to win to but that's not what's driving me. I have a full time job and OSC can't take too much of my time I am afraid. So I can't expect to win.
For me it is 100% personal challenge to make the best I can do with one synth and to finish a track. I am hopeless to finish anything so OSC is pushing me to do so. I am always on the look out for more knowledge and to improve myself. I learn things in OSC, partly by listening to others music and partly by simply doing the work with it. The lawnmower piece just blew me away. It is a totally new way to look at music. It's like the music is really telling a story. I never thought about that approach before. It's just one example.
The third thing is that I have to use synths that I most likely never would have used. I never used TAL Noise Maker before and I am sure I never would have if it wasn't for the OSC. This also goes for free effect plugins. During these 2 OSC I joined I discovered some effects that are really good and useful also outside OSC.
If people vote down my music I will not take it personal as if everyone hate me. If my track is not so good then I am deserving a low score and it would push me to make better next time. Honesty (which voting really is) can hurt and music is very personal to everyone so I can understand why some people get upset and take it personal. I have trouble with Tune Fish and I don't have enough time to make any track this time, so I will pass. It's my choice rather than making something I can't believe in myself.
If I ever win I will be so excited I will probably get a heart attack
..I came in as number 6 and that is just amazing to me already. I could cry about the fact that I just missed top 5 and could have gotten a prize, but it's pointless. I never won anything in my life, including lottery. But if it happens it's great, if not that's fine then. I win a lot of new knowledge and also some nice friends here
OSC is the greatest part of KVR for sure.
So please dear OSC friends, don't throw in the towel. See OSC as a school and a chance to improve and make new nice friends.

UH, I totally forgot to check...
CONGRATS, Z and the top 3 as well as everyone else, of course!

I'm thrilled to be up there with you guys, of course, while I am getting way too used to that...
(KIDDING!)
Nah, people, I wished we could figure out some alternative perspective on the competitive side or actually some fundamental change to the concept, but there's a pretty big chance that only a fraction of the songs will be listened to, if it wasn't for the demand to judge them.
And then there's the matter of rewards, of course, but only few ever get to reap them and they are limited after all.
Thing is, I came to the OSC to simply have fun with you guys, be creative and experience your creativity. To be brutally honest, I was wondering how well I could show-off eventually, because making music with a single synth and the challenge of it has always been a favorite thing of mine. That actually learning became the most amazing aspect of it really surprised me, honestly. I wasn't thinking about that. But prices or even the whole billboard concept...I didn't know about it and I was rather afraid of it, too, because I know what this does to people.
Here's a thought I have for all those, who didn't score high:
You cannot measure the love one has for your song by a number! How many of you made my day with your music and gave me a real high or a beautiful and rich inspiration, even when I had to choose a lower number compared to some other songs, but among all those, who I could only give a 5, there were some who I just had to respect, but some who I really loved for their music. And like me there are many others, who have that same sensation and same dilemma of not being able to tell you how much your music meant to them.
Thus, whether you were top 5 or top 100, your music has weight and glory and it's our privilege to experience this part of you!

Hahah wow third!
right under the jasinski and z.prime level with Taron!
Congratulations Z your track was AWESOME! well deserved and much respect to jasinski for making a "calm" but strong and emotional track with great sound design! Lots of other great tracks this time around and some hade really great parts in them.
Thank you guys for all the comments and votes, feels great that I made something that that so many of you could enjoy.
I have not got as many "crazy" or "mad" comments as in this track
I think I'm very far away of "finding myself" in music and I believe in not settling in a style or comfort zone that might appear, unless you start to feel it right in the core. So my strategy for "finding myself" is to go nuts and trying alot of uncomfortable things to find those thing that get me in the core and also get better technically (sound design, mixing etc.) to be able to realize ideas. I think the OSC is a great place to do this. Not saying I'm good at following this "strategy" and it would probably be a good idea, at this point, to make a finely nuanced coherently structured subtle ballad or some shit like that but uhm..
..........(kidding that's not shit)
I'll skip prize.

Congratz Z! ...buy a point
but so well deserved. Phenomenal track!
Congratulations too to the other top five-ers. I gave all of those tracks a 5 (obviously) and it always baffles me how they separate out in the final scoring but I guess a little subjectivity goes a long way in the end.
Many, many great tracks down the list too so well done all and see you soon
