I usually even arrange them into a whole song by laying out scenes. If I play them in order I get to hear what the song will sound like and I can easily rearrange things. Once I get to the point where I like the basic arrangement and I'm ready to add automation / fills / risers / etc, I hit "record" and play the song into the arrangement, then from then on I work in Arrangement mode.
That's pretty much my workflow too. It sometimes feels too easy ... :tu:
me too. But i'd guess it works well for me because the styles i largely work in have a simple verse chorus etc structure, and shortish phrases or chord structures rather than something with extended developing passages , or something that has to work to cues. I can't imagine using session view for more composed or ambient work, or scoring for example. and i'm not sure that Ableton's Arrange view would be best for that either...

I think I should clarify. He's not really using clips in this. Well technically they're clips but he's working with audio. When you work with audio in Ableton you work in arrangement view as he is. People who do glitch type music and mix their track work this way. I personally never use arrangement other than to get the bounce and then I mix in Protools.
Ableton has the edge but not really in arrangement view, in session view where you can easily preview, mix and match, edit clips. Automation is easier too. To me working in Ableton session view isn't like working with software, its far more personal because I can operate at the same rate I can think it up so its like an extension of who I am. :hihi: Yeah, its very spiritual.

That's exactly what I was trying to say about Live in my post yesterday.

You always need to add something to it, whether someone's software or a good half a dozen user scripts, not to mention requiring User skins to make it look decent and not so incredibly piecemeal and ugly. Then, after that, you apparently need to spend the next several weeks or months customising those hideous stock menus and so on. Yes, I know it does record, but I expect something ready 'right out of the box', no matter the price. I'm no tweaker and Reaper is the Tweaker's Toy of DAWs and just very behind the current times in workstations. Reaper was an almost instant Fail for me.
"whether someone's software or a good half a dozen user scripts"
Reapack package manager solved this IMO

mpl mapping, and spk 77 velocity/CC shaper is the only needed tools in the first round and yepp a good skin (iLogic is brilliant) the only big missing point in Reaper (in EDM point of view) is the absence of the automation clips (should use MIDI clips with CCs instead of it) so the current MIDI based workflow looks somehow like this in Reaper

MIDI clip drawing uses the prev. selected clips as base so worth to create selection groups (as fake patterns)

mpl mapping sometimes not working on ghosted clips as u can see, but otherwise Reaper has quite fast workflow (for routing, clip creating creating VCA master/slaves, screen sets etc. can save mixer states too, have freezing, sub projects so anything u want and more :) ... have action for opening instrument on the currently mouse hovered track like things ) iLogic skin looks like this in full res.

IMO this is the best usable DAW currently, personally really like it

First rule of fight club: Every thread is a Reaper thread. :hihi:

Why is it that anytime someone starts a thread about any brand of DAW, to comment or praise it, that at least one Reaper Fanboy has to go OT by saying, Oh, Reaper can do that too, IF you just add this, this, this and do this, this, and this, then click here, then click it twice and further boring instructions?

I did give Reaper a good try. Friend played me a few awful videos of this man was a dreadful Lawn Guyland accent, talking at 90 miles an hour and clicking on things even faster. Gave me a total headache. No good at all. View any other DAW tutorial – much calmer, more pro.

So, no matter, investigated on my own. No ARA, poor to none groove and clip help, overdubbing and comps are a complete and total joke. Sorry, but Reaper may have been grand in 2012, but it's going on 2017 fast, and I think I can say for many that we work much much faster on the truly modern and FULLY updated DAWs. Poor Reaper has fallen behind.

I investigated the whys and wherefores of Reaper's lack. Went to their forum and it's constant excuse making. A big one is “We only have 1 or 2 devs ..” If Reaper can't be supported as the commercial product it pretends it is, they should drop the goofy name, change it to something nice like “childrens First DAW / Workstation, and just make it freeware and offer to kids. It would be more appropriate considering the lack of upkeep.

The little fellow who owns Reaper, I discovered, made many many multi- multi-millions on his sale of WinAmp to AOR and other software, so excuse of the small dev group and semi-pro support and attitude just does not hold water. Either the thing is commercial and customers are respected and satisfied, or it should beocome freeware. Also, I read there about an hundred times more tweaking and script and skinning than I saw making any actual music. I read of too many people tweaking for 6 months before getting any real work done. I'm guessing only 1 in a hundred every do really record with Reaper from what I read and saw.

Now, I apologise for the OT post, as I would much rather discuss Live and it's what I came here for. But you Cocko fanboy intruders ought to start your own threads. At the very least, you need setting straight about your cheap but hopeless Daw. Studio One, Live, most up-to-date stations are far faster to work in and you need to face it. Its a fact!

Post

I don't agree with all of that, but thank you. Needed to be said.

Reaper is not like fight club, because apparently the first rule of Reaper is to never shut the f&@k up about Reaper.

don't think that freeware DAWs need universal track(midi/audio like hibrid in Bitwig) with item automation and mixer-slot based(from which slot) bounce in place

don't know your needs but for EDM the only BIG missing is the clip envelopes (it has usable MIDI control assignment finally from the prev. week :D > https://www.helgoboss.org/projects/realearn/ )

" Reaper is to never shut the f&@k up about Reaper." ok-ok :P

Same goes to Max4Live fanboy. It doesn't appeal to me at all.

what the eff does this thread have to do with Logic and Reaper? Why are people posting shit about these two?

No one but YOU are saying anything about Max4 Live here. How funny, too -- you really can't survive in Reaper without adding that SWS thing and, likely, one or two user scripts and further trash.

But you can work furiously fast and forever without ever adding or touching Max4Live in Live 9. I suspect toonba is a closet Reaper fanboy, desparately looking for a snark against Live by mentioning Max4Live, which really isn't being dealt with in this tread at all!

Reaper is like a religion. You won't stop until the last one in the uncivilized world is made a true believer. :P

But joke aside, i don't get it too. What has all of this to do with Reaper?

I obviously agree with Kinh's sentiment here.

The explanation of the Cocko Reaper fanboys in this thread is quite simple: just as you find users who have bought some outrageously expensive bit of software going on in threads forever to defend their purchase (even though they are having great buyer's remorse at the discovery that the product quality turned out to be a fail and not worth it), Reaper fanboys must do much the same for a diferent reason:

Although Reaper is inexpensive, they have spent many months customising and groping and altering and trying to bring the confusing mess of menus and more that they found upon downloading the stock Reaper setup. They discover later that a year has passed with all their tweaking, yet they have recorded little or nothing. They discover that Reaper is truly lacking in many modern DAW features, and that the rate of modernizing by its devs is a snail's pace and most user requests are constantly ignored. What to do?

This explains why we find them invading every other DAW thread, insisting that Reaper can do what the more modern DAWs do, and going on and on, even if they can't or only can with much extra work. It's about DENIAL. It's hard to admit that something you just wasted a year or two or three of your musical existence still isn't really up to par.

I risk overkill here, but let us put this thread-intrusive DAW to bed once and for all: just the names "Cocko" and "Reaper" have adolescent written all over them. But it did get me thinking - why not rename this software to something more pleasant and continue the youngster appeal? Why not call it "PlayDAW for youngsters"? Make it freeware and package it with the caution to users: "You can customise PlayDAW all you want, but this is best a project for you and your 4th-grade Computer Science teacher, since it may prevent you from PlayDAW's real purpose - recording music!"

Criticizing a DAW because of it's name is probably the most juvenile thing I've ever seen seen on this sub forum...

And this a forum where edward hangs out.
