The price looks OK, but they've stated that the next versions will drop 32 bit vst's and the bridge.
And I'm wondering if the next versions will be out soon.

If so, it would probably mean another charge if it falls outside the grace period.
Has anyone gone for it?
32bit is a non-issue. most plugins are 64bit anyways, and for those oddities that I use, which are still 32bit, I use Jbridge. it's much much better than the "native" bridge Steinberg "had". you can buy it for peanuts and it's highly recommended.

When it gets announced I'll register my licence and get a grace period upgrade to v9 and be able to use 8.5 as well.

That's my plan, I can wait for December, if it isn't released by next year then I may rethink.
I was wondering if grace period free upgrades work with upgrades too. I have an activated Artist 8.5 and would like to get Cubase Pro 9. Are you 100% sure that delaying the activation of the upgrade to Pro 8.5 till the beginning of grace period will give me Cubase Pro 9 after its release? I wouldn't want to spend money on upgrade to Cubase pro 8.5 just to find out it won't allow me to get Cubase Pro 9.

Could anyone confirm grace period works with upgrades too?

Does activating 0.5 upgrade from 0.0 version within the grace period makes one eligible for getting the next big version ?

Post

It worked for me from Cubase 7.5 to 8.

Yea the update sale was till July 7th, but I only saw it available on sweetwater. I couldn't find any mention of it anywhere after the initial announcements, and it was pretty obscure and hidden. For whatever reason, it was also not easy to find on the Steinberg website, almost seemed like they made a mistake announcing it or something, so they just buried it thereafter.

I think I'm going to go for it. My computer is a mess with Cubase variations right now.
I've got SX-1, SX-3, LE AI 6 and 7, Elements 7, and Cubase 5 on it right now.
Legitimate/bought and paid for.

I've been using Cubase almost since the start on Atari.
Bought Cubase 5 a while ago, but it has more than I use or need.

The LE AI and Element versions are missing some stuff I like to use,
like midi fx, and a few other things. Those versions came with some Yamaha
stuff I bought.

I think I'll upgrade from Elements to Artist to have the middle ground.

Post

Good for you, felis! Artist is the sweet spot imo between features and price.

Post

Yep - the sweet spot.

I just goof around with synths and vst's, and record some of my acoustic instruments.
It's not like I've got a studio for hire or anything, and most likely never will.

The full version of Cubase 5 has stuff I've never given more than a cursory glance at -
stuff like surround, control room setups and so on.
The Artist version has everything I'm ever likely to use.

Does Cubase still have weird audio drop-outs and gaps of silence when doing things like adding tracks, moving insert FX around in the mixer, and generally *using* the thing whilst playback is running?? :o

Nah, there are a bunch now that don't do it, not for me at least. Studio One 3 and Reaper 5 spring to mind. Maybe it's soundcard dependent? :scared:

I gotta try this in Studio One 2 Producer, i was sure it does that too when adding tracks, or fx. Maybe i'm wrong.

I got the Artist 8.5 upgrade. Downloaded it, but haven't installed or activated it yet.
Still sorting out which stuff to put on the usb elicenser.

I figured what the heck, and got the Cubase Elements 8, and Wavelab Elements 9 upgrades too.
They were only $25 apiece as an upgrade, and I have them installed and activated on my laptop.

I'm going to get another usb elicenser. I have two of them and one is broken. I don't even remember
what was on that one.
I think they're making them smaller now. The older ones are like regular full size usb sticks.
The one I had on a laptop stuck out too far, kept getting banged and finally broke.
The one I have on my desktop is plugged in the back, and the computer almost never gets moved.
That one is really old, but has never given me any trouble.

I used to have a full version of Wavelab too, but that one got kind of got swept under the rug after a
few OS and computer changes.
The Wavelab guy (forget his name), was real helpful and sent me new serial numbers a couple times.
I didn't really use a lot of the features on the full version, so I figure Elements will work just fine for me.
Same with the full version of Cubase - the middle ground Artist version will be just what I'm after.
Seems like countless hours spent trying to get stuff downloaded, but I should be good for another
10 years or so now - LOL

I heard it was something to do with the Cubase handles PDC.

The control room - I ignored this for years, then one afternoon, feeling bored, played with it for an hour or so. Now it's indispensible.
Variaudio - being able to correct wrong notes is a god-send. Saves me from redoing my brilliant guitar solos ( :D ). I can also use it on my vocal libraries to get a part in tune with the backing, not to mention creating harmonies.
Revence - an extremely good reverb. It often displaces the Valhallas...
More versatile automation...
Once you've used these functions, you miss them when they're not there.

All excellent stuff, and I'm sure they're indispensable for people who use it seriously.

I'm basically a hobbyist with precious little time to devote to it.
I'm sure I'll be more than satisfied with what I've got.
