i've pursued this for ages as well.. first random lyrics prog on a tandy coco, adapted from a dice system. in '93 i bought a mirage and wrote a program that would print sequences i would then input manually into a qx21.. phonemes were sequenced on the mirage and pitch shifted. completely unintelligible :)
i'm "obsessed" with revealing the virtue of nature, and using algorithmic sequences seems like one of the best ways to "turn the eyes of the electronic." current projects.. i believe my laptop is fast enough to run a rt singing, playing generator, altho i think i'll be limited to only a few dozen words (se isn't anywhere to build giant logic circuits, or at least my brain on se.. i don't even like to use my hands anymore)
i'm sort of in-between the automatic band project, and the semi-automatic 'live jamming platform,' with params such as you mentioned (dunno if you've seen my various 'algorithmic' vsti) which i'm sure will put stars in the eyes of anyone with a laptop and an ego, whereas the automatic band.. i have no clue how people will react. i plan on just sitting there with a joint.
for these projects, i am sure i will have to create an 'se ensemble' to run in se, since the intermodule connections won't follow standard vst protocol.
i would concur as to the ultimate utility of these (and, well, so many other..) technologies..

It was a GFA BASIC program that would just create a random pattern of notes and then, over time, randomly did slight modifications to that pattern.
It used 4 independent midi channels, and you could set up each channel with some basic properties, like instrument to use, minimum and maximum note duration, min/max octaves to span, etc.
It also had a comprehensive array of chords and harmonics, so that when for example the pads shifted from D to C, the three other tracks shifted their harmonics accordingly.
It produced quite some interesting output. Probably mostly music suitable for relaxation, recreation and stuff like that. But nice.(All my friends liked the ouput of that darn program more than the tunes I composed myself...
)
I always wanted to do a VSTi version of that idea. Kind of a "tingle-tangle" VSTi that autmatically adds some random melody or accompaniment to your song, maybe based or influenced on the MIDI input it gets.
The idea was, using the existing Vivaldi MX engine and all existing presets and just replacing the GUI with some basic parameters to set up the melody generator properties for each channel...
Man, that would be one useless plug-in, wouldn't it?

Aah, well, no. Not. You can always modify its output. as you could try'nRhyme the output of Xoxos lyric-generator as well. One might not match the beauty of it, but... well, at least a bit has to be done by the human interface, doesn't it?

once the generated music and constant virtual reality worlds are in place, we will move on to phase 2: the algorithmic media appreciating device. then we will see the true worth of those pesky organics, looking like a bunch of weebles in giant king cab trucks going in loops thru the wendy's drive-thru saying "lookee mee! i gots the best of everthang an i don't have to lift finger" while their f**king shiny belt buckles tarnish from the butter oozing through their nasty f**king pores, congealing in the arctic blast of their freon devices.
