Hey everyone!

I'm just in the process of getting a new machine - almost certainly switching to an iMac (from Windows XP - I really don't like the later versions, nor am I impressed with current pc hardware offerings).

I use Ableton (and might revert to Cubase and/or Reason once on the Mac) which is fine of course - but I have long been using an old version of Adobe Audition for occasional audio editing on PC. Not nearly enough to justify subscribing to the Adobe CC though...

So please could you let me know about alternatives? One I have heard of is Amadeus Pro 2, which sounds interesting though perhaps not very full featured.... anyway, your thoughts would be appreciated.

Many thanks!

I prefer wavelab.
Long ago I was a long time sound forge (pc) user but never really got to like it on mac.
Theres Twisted wave that I like but probably doesn't fill your requirements as you think Amadeus doesn't have enough features. It could be worth a check though as the navigation and basic features in it are very efficient and quick imho.
There are demos of both twisted wave and amadeus afaik.
Soundsets and presets for Absynth.
Sounds and presets for UVI Falcon "Iterata X".
Bazille soundset - Crystalline Textures 3.

Much appreciated - thanks!

Same chipsets and CPUs... so the core hardware is essentially the same.

One thing to note about iMac:
The only thing you can "upgrade" easily is the RAM.
ie: If you want to upgrade to a real SSD for boot drive, you've got to peel off the glass display.
This can certainly be done... but it gets blood-pressure going for even the most tech-savvy.
You have to use special double-sided tape to reseat the glass... and you've got one shot to get it right.

The iMac with 6700k is currently the fastest Mac you can buy (faster than the current $4k Mac Pro).

Thanks for the tips!

I will check out the 6700k :-)

Is that the one with the 5K screen?

Yes, the latest model with 5k display.

Fission (Rogue Amoeba) is also good on Mac. Cheap ($30) and fast at editing for various tasks. As mentioned, Twisted Wave is also good.

I use an audio editor for editing interviews for radio. Most of the time a 2 track editor is great, but I've also used Reaper for that too. It can be very fast when configured to that task and sometimes when I am making multiple renditions of a piece I prefer multiple tracks.

On the freebie front there's ocenaudio, but I tend to just use Audacity here.

Sure... and it's a whole lot easier than peeling the glass. :)
Of course, it's also substantially more expensive.

Regarding speeds:
A quality SATA-III SSD sustains ~520MB/Sec (that's pretty fast for a boot drive).
To out-do that, you're looking at PCIe x4 SSD (M2 or PCIe card - which can sustain up to 2500MB/Sec).

So if your drive needs replacing you're screwed basically.
