Splice rent to own Serum plan, what do you think?

In the spirit of total fairness, Serum doesn't have filters that were designed to be wholly dedicated to analogue (i.e. that oh so present, weighty, jump-out-at-cho-mama sound), while anyone knows Diva does. And, Serum never advertised itself to be that.

I should also mention that if Serum was dedicated toward that type of sound, I wouldn't be purchasing it for that, as I already have the abovementioned HZ and XILS IV for that.

Or perhaps you can, I'd honestly love to hear examples. Not a challenge or disrespectful thing at all, just honestly curious. To be completely forthright, I won't argue this point from here out, I've been doing this for the past weekend, hours and hours of programming, and I did the same last year when I owned both.

I dodn't have Serum yet, just messing around with the demo. As for Zebra, I have the regular one, didn't try the HZ because I didn't realize it makes so much difference. Is there a demo for Zebra HZ?

My friend, I wholeheartedly recommend to you HZ. Not only do you receive the (much and eagerly awaited) Zebra 3 free after purchase, but you will open yourself to an amazing world of great percussive and cinematic possibilities. I can't recommend it enough.

There are Dark Zebra videos, but no demo I've aware of.

I must say, I'm so glad I was able to recommend that to you, thanks for the opportunity. Dark Zebra opens up a ton of doors.

I haven't 'bought' Serum yet as i was going to run the demo to try out a few more things before subscribing but it's pointless if it's two years old. Strange that the demo is so old if it wants to attract new buyers, read it only runs for 15 minutes as well. First impressions count and all that.

I agree about it being a programmers synth and i think some more presets from top sound designers and an updated demo would really help potential new customers.

Feel free to post any audio clips you find or create, would love to hear what you guys are doing with it.

Comparing Serum and Zebra is like comparing an Apple with a Cherry. The sound is different, workflow is different, etc. I have both just because of that reason. I do think this Splice rent is a good idea for people who badly want a plugin but can't put out the money up front. Talented people are not always rich ..and especially if you are young

Your latter point is pretty obvious, while the former I have contention with. Zebra is mostly obviously different in that you can't import wave files, however there are definite similarities. I strongly recommend you try demo'ing (if you don't outright own) the two and finding out for yourself if you haven't already. It's also a good way to learn important things. I don't mean this in a condescending way at all, I just want to help.


I also should say, if you feel Serum is more than punchy and weighty enough for your own, unique musical vision, than that's MORE than good enough. It's you who knows what's best according to your vision.

Well... time to give Serum a ride. I'll at least demo it three days now. If it suits me, might extend it with some $10 payments. Although i surely don't need a new synth. Especially interested how the filters are.

But if anythning, I'm mostly after edgy futuristic sounds useable in psychedelic trance and less interested in cinematic sounds. Also I don't think that a good filter may only be an analogue modelled one. I do find Serum filters a bit weak though but various things possible at the oscillator level have their own value (i've made some patches in a demo which don't use filters at all).

In terms of other synths i guess i don't click with a lot of synth interfaces but Serum was immediate and that's a factor. I don't own Zebra and that with DZ would run to about £250, better be bloody fantastic!

I have synths for different roles anyway; Blocks for modular, Monark for bass, Oddity 2 for pads and Serum would be ideal for plucks and stabs, it does do PPG style bells and glassy leads really well as well.

Just running through these videos and getting lots of insights on the purpose of things and Steve's vision behind the different features of Serum:

I'm more convinced listening to Steve Duda talk about Serum than i am from demoing it. But yeah some great insights there, fx section videos are worth a watch.

If you have the drop or anything i recommend putting that after it, really responds well IMO.

I think cause you're essentially subscribing but the first 3 days are free and you can cancel if you change your mind so it's a gratis period. I cancelled on the 2nd day, no issue but yeah that's how Splice works re billing but you can cancel and resume any time.
