Hi,
here is a long time (1992) SY99 user. Mine can load the sy77 stuff too. I have some links you may be interested in but ... at home. Now at work, i'll send you later. BTW if you try a google search you'll find more of them on your own too. Bye

One of the best places is the SY99 group, on the Yahoo Groups server: Yahoo SY99 Group

Don't let the SY99 name fool you. These synths are very similar, and can load many of the same presets. There are lots of folks on that list with SY77 and TG77 synths, just waiting for someone to chat with. They even have a files area with about 5,000 presets available for download. Most of these presets will work in the SY77 and TG77, but some do require the extra features found in the SY99. The folks in that group can also probably answer any other questions you might have about the SY77.

take care,
McLilith

Thank you! Googled some links, but they are about commercial patches mainly and stuff like that. Will try to join Yahoo SY99 user group !

I got me a trusty SY77E! - it's a PCM upgrade board from (I think it's called) MusicTronix in Germany?
It's got 113 or more additional AWM waves that are ALOT better than the SY77's internal selection. They're not 'the best' by any means, but much better atleast. ;) My SY77 served me well from '89 to '99 pretty well, and I own EVERY PCM WAVE card for it! Including many RY30's which are compatible as well. (I'm not giving these away! :P )

Think most have got the links covered for you, but there is a almost dedicated forum to SY's at www.ex5tech.com in Discussions/Other Synths you might be interested in? Topics on how to locate the Expansion Board, backlight problems, floppy drive refits, etc.

Enjoy! :D

A very happy SY85 user on this end :D

SY85's are pretty nice too, and how much RAM do they have again Myst? :? The only gripe I have with the 85's is why Yamaha went with that 2 line LED display, as opposed to the nice LCD's of the 77/99's?
But the one upside is your SY85 screen will outlive the pretty blue ones of the 77/99's. When those blue backlights go, their impossible to fix. :(

I still have a TG55 with loads of waveform and patch cards. I'll never sell it because it houses some of my best, secret-weapon patches. It's fun to plug in to it and just space out sometimes.

That's not true. All you need is a replacement EL strip to insert between the LCD's glass panel and it's supporting circuit board. Unlike what some people believe, you don't have to replace the whole LCD assembly.

No clue on the RAM and I'm not home atm so I can't check. What I do know is that I've been sniffing around the EX5 site and realize that I've spent very little time with the SY of late. (and my eyes always open for a TG77/99)

I hear you McLilith, a buddy of mine in town fixed up his the same way, and offered to do mine as well. BUT - finding this EL strip or whatever has to be done at like a 'surplus store'. And the ones I checked out don't have them anymore. :( Yamaha and Authorized Service centers contend it's going to have to be a full replacement at around a cost of '$400! :-o If you can offer any insight where I and/or others might be able to lacate an EL strip, I'd greatly appreciate it! :D

My man Mystahr, sniffing out the EX5 no less now! 8) It's a pretty awesome synth - but after being spoilt by alot of the amenities of the SY77/SY99's, the EX5 really cuts corners. :( The guts are there, you just have to be a 'brain surgeon' to get at them. And even though I got an EX5, I still wouldn't turn my nose up at snagging a SY99 at a decent price either. That's like a SR-71 Blackbird of synths still.
