I thought it likely, also. However, in the case of Ableton Lite, the software is serial'ed, and tied to an account. This, despite 'lite' being thrown away with any old bit of hardware

Even just for tracking purposes I could imagine a magazine license being different from a hardware license etc

No, not at all. Not until you registered it. And even when you registered it, you're able to sell it, as far as i know. Kind of the same as with Cubase LE in this case.

Absolutely correct. On two separate occasions, I have given away Ableton Live Lite which came bundled with hardware, to someone who would use it. Both times I had registered the software to try it (they were different version numbers) and both times, Ableton support were extremely helpful and transferred the licence to the new owner, without charge and in a very timely manner.
