That would be me :)

From what I can gather, the idea with the bar was to stabilise the string vibration to aid the MIDI tracking and prevent "dead spots" along the neck. This would have been especially useful with the G-77 bass version.

It also gives the guitar great sustain. And it looks rad :)

picked up a few more lower-cost guitars:

Peavey Raptor in Custom Gulf Coast Blue (kind of an 's' style setup, but 'pointier')
Archer TT10-SB (semi-hollow 't' style guitar with P90s)
AXL AZ-800-SN Marquee ('j' style with P90s)

Upon arrival, Archer and AXL were a bit of a letdown; both arrived in a single-layered packaging, and with zero paperwork or allen wrench(es); except for the Marquee which had a rather large allen wrench (for truss rod), but nothing else; not even the vibrato bar. On the bright side, Amazon refunded 15% of the price of that guitar.

The AXL and Archer actually shipped directly from Amazon, and both had the appearance of being guitars which had sat around in the warehouse for some time.

In contrast, the Peavey showed up in double boxing, and with all accessories; vibrato bar, 2 allen wrenches, warranty paperwork.

How do those P-90s sound? I had an epiphone Sheraton about 15 years ago, and I swapped its mediocre humbuckers for humbucker sized P-90s. I loved that guitar, and dont know why I got rid of it...

Post

The P90s sound good. Believe it or not, the Archer might actually be the superior guitar. The AXL's pickups seem a bit weak and non-responsive in comparison. Even so, the AXL sounds pretty good, too. But at this point the Archer would be one I'd recommend, and the AXL is more 'meh'. The responsiveness of the Archer's pickups is surprising.

Sounds like you had a really cool Epiphone. It could be that everybody wonders where 1 or more of their guitars ever went... i know i do...

Anyway, I like the 'chug' and 'spank' of P90s.

(edit) revisited the AXL versus Archer again today, this time with less ear fatigue. i'd say the AXL has better pickups. the Archer's are 'more bitey' and the AXL's 'mellower' in comparison. the Archer's pickups are probably 'more powerful' but today the AXL sounded 'better'. ymmv.

I can now focus on a new guitar that I totally don't need.

Totally left-field/off the map:

I have a love-hate relationship with MM stuff. On one hand, they put together some of the best guitars. On the other, there is ALWAYS a fatal flaw.

Well, the first one couldn't be babied properly so instead of just giving up I got another one of the same. Seems like bingo (fingers crossed)

What I like best about MM stuff is that they have butta necks. The radius and cut fit my hands better than anything else. Plus, I think she's a beauty. Really easy on the eyes.

Butter neck, you mean everything's perfect but her neck? ;)

btw, what's the fatal flaw?

Oh now Uncle, you kidder :hihi:

I was referring to prior attempts. The very very expensive "majesty" was one. Didn't matter what I did, what strings I put on it, or if there was nut sauce ... it would not stay in tune. There are others..... like the Steve Morse which had the worst sounding neck pickup in history and the worst case of fret-shrinkage eva.
