For closed back, I'd go Audio Technica ATH-M40x's, or you might be able to get ATH-M50x's on sale. I've had the ATH-M40s for years.
However, if you aren't using them for recording, I prefer AKG Semi-Open. There are a number of models around $100 so start at K240 MKII.
I also have Sennheiser HD201 which have a limited frequency range so are a useful consumer reference. They are cheap and I would recommend them as a second set.

I miss MindPrint. My TRIO needs a big brother.

Check out Sonarworks Reference 3 Headphone Plugin:
www.jrrshop.com/sonarworks-reference-3-headphone-plugin
If that sounds like something you'd be interested, you might want to look for headphones on their supported list:
http://sonarworks.com/headphones/supported-headphones/
We also have the Sonarworks bundled together with the Waves NX headphone plugin, which is a killer combination:

The Sony MDR7506 has been around a while, is pretty durable, and costs $79.99. The MDR V6 is almost exactly the same and retails for twenty dollars more. Sennheiser's HD280 is another option.

Indeed! And: these Samsons are actually rebranded Superlux HD-681s, which arguably had the crown for best price/performance ratio for quite a whilejethrobull wrote:I have been using these for a while now and I love them. http://www.samsontech.com/samson/produc ... ies/sr850/

Nowadays, they have upgraded the model to HD-681 EVO: https://www.thomann.de/gb/superlux_hd_681_evo_bk.htm
In my opinion, the EVOs are the best budget headphones on the market. Ridiculously cheap, yet I can honestly speak of them in the same sentence when a/b:ing them with my Beyerdynamic DT 880 PROs, Audio-technica ATH-M50s or MB Quart QP 805s. They are different, yes, but realistically comparable. Google more stuff about these, it's probable you won't be disappointed for the price.
Basically, these Superluxes are priced like bulk department store headphones : P, yet offer sonic profiles comparable to three-figure phones. They are worlds different than some random throwaway set you could pick up in that manner.

Check out the AKG 550s. Very clear and detailed throughout the wide soundstage. I got mine for £70 and won't ever give them up.

I agree with Guenons Superlux recommendation; I have the 668Bs and they're quite remarkable, especially for ~£30. Very detailed sound with a pretty accurate bass (ie not dj levels
) I bought replacement velour pads for them (£6) and they are now the most comfortable phones I've owned, literally forget I have them on.

Sennheiser HD280 gets my vote. The first time I heard a voice through those headphones, it startled me, because I thought someone was in the room with me! Excellent clarity, tight bass, and very little ringing or sibilance in the high frequencies. My only complaint about them is the ear pads- mine smooshed out pretty quickly, and I had to tie strings around them.
However, I would highly recommend spending more on a pair of headphones, as this is your primary interface with your work material. Think of it like the difference between a small monitor and a big, high res monitor, but for your ears instead of your eyes.
