Local store sells Reason upgrades for €105.
That is almost -20% in comparison with the Reason site itself..
Which is obviously ridiculous lol speaking of loyalty..

Well, the company's own stores are usually always the most expensive. Retailers mostly sell the software cheaper. No idea what the psychology behind that is. Maybe the idea is that the customer is the most willing, when he visits the original website, because of all the promises, and bogus they're creating there. Don't know...

I strongly doubt that DAW companies dump their upgrades at Thomann dot de.
For instance, Thomann doesn't sell upgrades for Cubase no more.

ANyone tried the PusheR script to allow you to use Push with Reason? I haven't used Reason since 2.5 and have flittered around every other daw since then, but out of curiousity and the decent reviews it's been getting, tried reason 9. Love it. It is definitely it's own thing and that was what turned me off ages ago, but playing around with it again reminded me what a good program it is. Would never ditch live, but the absolute pain of getting my external instruments running with Studio one* is the biggest turn off of that application, but in reason it's really bloody easy. moreso than live. But! using it with the push would kind tip me over the edge. So, any thoughts?

*I have bought way too much stuff I've never spent as much time trying to get my head around as I should do, but that's mid life crisises for you.

I just find it a total faff. I think it thinks it's trying to make things easier by expecting you to set up the hardware beforehand, but it does like forgetting what you've done, and it does just seem a whole lot easier, the way that Live and Reason have done it, with all-in-one modules. Cheers for the heads up on the forum. Will check it out.

It works very well. Take the plunge. It"s worth it if you are serious about using Push with Propellerhead Reason.

How are people finding Reason 9?

I've been running the demo for a couple of days on my new iMac... I last sprung for version 6 and was an unhappy user for a while. I notice that the upgrade price for me from v6 is very cheap - the same as for those who invested in the intervening versions which I ignored.

Liking the pitch correction and auto warping stuff - sounds very good indeed.

No a lot of new devices though considering there'e been three major upgrades since my last version... just the players and a couple of effects. Have they given up adding instruments?

There's no official statement from PHeads but their actions indicate this is the case. They seem to be pushing a new model where upgrading Reason only includes changes to the DAW proper with the occasional support device (pulsar and the players came with 9). However, they've released the following paid-for extensions since 6.5:

Instruments:

The Drummer series (Studio, Power, Classic)
The Guitarist series (Pop Chords, Power Chords, Acoustic)
The Radical series (Piano and Keys)
Parsec
PX7

Effects:

Synchronous
Rotor
Polar

Buying all those will set you back 1,030 USD. And that's including the "savings" when buying the A-List Drummer bundle and the Radical Instruments Bundle. Sometimes they go on sale or get bundled with upgrade pricing to Reason, but those are the prices if you paid for them today.

I'd be fine with the Drummer, Radical, and Guitarist instruments as paid extensions. They're pretty much just Kontakt players of 3rd party samples. I am less pleased about Parsec, PX7, Synchronous, Rotor, and Polar. Those are exactly the kinds of devices that used to come with Reason upgrades. Buying just those will cost you $385. That's almost the same cost as a full, new copy of Reason 9.

The most disappointing thing about this has pretty much killed the sharing of combinators in the PHead community and sharing .reason files with others. The set of devices that everyone has is pretty much stagnant since 6.5. Anyone using newer devices can only share those setups with others that have the same REs. It used to be a complete playground of experimentation and sharing. Now it's not-quite-a-full-DAW and it's lost the ability to easily share between others. I guess as long as they make more money selling this new model they won't care what I think.

Thanks for that analysis - interesting. This is pretty much why I stopped upgrading before - I predicted at the time that the cost of up keeping Reason would rise significantly with the addition of Re format, and so it seems to be.

That said, the improvements to the core DAW itself seem to be fairly significant. The look and feel is much more modern, audio editing and pitch correction... even MIDI output (never thought that would come!).

Back in the day I used Reason to complement Ableton. When I first used Live (version 2) it had no MIDI element at all, just audio, but I could rewire in Reason 2. These days both are full featured. But Reason 9 itself is a cheap upgrade for me, and I might go for it anyway, as I've (almost!) always had a soft spot for it!

It's your money and if you feel it's worth the price you should absolutely do it.

I too have a soft spot for Reason and it's why I'm critical of their new model.

I tried several times to use Reason as my primary DAW but I always missed my plugin instruments. I hate Rewire and the hybrid workflow. Nowadays I mostly use Reaper and Bitwig 8-track. I've mostly moved my craving for modular patching by using the Mutools MUX demo and I'm looking forward to what Bitwig 2 gives us in the way of patching.

I still load my dusty copy of R6.5 to play with combinator patches though.
