I don't share the view that it sounds thin, to the contrary, it sounds rather old-skool and powerful in my view. Although it looks very different, it can be used to emulate a Jupiter 8 for instance. Its basic sound is similar in my view, after playing around with some of the presets for a while, like one of those brass patches.
Maybe people think it sounds thin because it doesn't have the usual voice stacking thingy that Dune, Sylenth1, Hive etc. have.
But when you add chorus, it sounds very pleasant and "full" in an old-skool way. Luckily it is not one of those supersaw synths.
The equalizer is pretty effective, similar to the one in Element.
What I would like to see is one-hand operation of controls and mousewheel support. And better contrast for the drop-down menus.

Yes I see it, how does Serum relate to Predator ?EnGee wrote:@ FLS: Yes, Thanks. I got it when I loaded Serum
( @ Synthman2000: see image attached, the one for Serum).
For version 2 of Predator, I can predict Unison for every oscillator![]()
By the way, to make the sounds really thick, you can change the Play Mode to Unison 2, 4, or 6 and play with the Detune knob. Unfortunately, You cannot use the ARP with the Unison (as far as I understood).
I really think it is a very nice synth with so many abilities. I'm glad to have itI still love the sound of Dune 2 and Serum though, but they have absolutely different characer. I hope version 2 of Predator doesn't change its character a lot, maybe polish it more by adding more functions. For the GUI, I hope also to keep the same style. It is beautiful IMO.
I must be missing something here. Why does a control on Serum which clearly controls phase start in degrees on new note trig relate to what was being described for Predator ?

Glad to see my comment caused a ruffle is some pajamas! Didn't think a little tease would cause a war, in any case, I have tried the demo for predator and to me it sounds very thin and lousy (my opinion.) sort of like those freeware synths made in synth-edit you can find anywhere. I really just don't like how it sounds. hope that could clarify what I meant. gg kvr.

I got what you mean after your first post, I just don't share your view. I have had many SE synths over the years, but they did not sound anything like it.

IMO, he really should take the synth engine, and build something big from it. It does indeed sound very good, but it's also quite limited.Pyrotek45 wrote:However, the freeware synth charlatan is amazing and I use it all the time.

Because I thought to explain to you what FLS meant. It's not about the free phase that you kept mentioning, but sorry my mistake!Synthman2000 wrote:Yes I see it, how does Serum relate to Predator ?EnGee wrote:@ FLS: Yes, Thanks. I got it when I loaded Serum

Setting the phase right looks very easy in Serum judging from that screenshot...
Does anyone here know whether the waveforms in Predator are made from wavetable maps or whatever they are called (like with Sylenth, Hive) or from scratch for each note?

No worries man, not trying to pick a fight just trying to understand it myself. The manual is not the clearest on this aspect.
Recording a single repeated note and bouncing it will clearly demonstrate what is happening when. Check the start of the waveform.

You are right Teksonik! I have read this in the 'buy' page of Predator (in Rob Papen website):Teksonik wrote:Perfect isn't it ? For sound design or simply scrolling through the preset manager the large screen is very functional.EnGee wrote:I didn't know there is a big screen!Indeed it fits beautifully on my 27" screen (1920x1080) with very clear image

$63 ???EnGee wrote:Anyway after 2 mins from demoing it, I bought it from JRR Shop for $63It's a steal at that price ! $49 for the upgrade to version 2 will get you an even more awesome synth for less than $115. (or is there a grace period and you get version 2 for free ? )
"- Free upgrades to Predator 2.0
If you purchased Predator in March, April or up to(and including) the 5th of May 2016 the upgrade to Predator 2.0 will be free!
Users that purchased at robpapen.com will receive an automated upgrade by email.
If you purchased at a dealer, you will be able to send us an email with a copy of your invoice attached once Predator 2.0 is released.
This information will be placed on the homepage as well."
Wow! This is unbelievable! And I thought $49 upgrade is a steal! What's happening in the Soft world today?! It becomes crazy affordable
Anyway, if someone on the fence, I'm poking him/her to jump into buying Predator nowadays
Sorry! Not accurate information. Please ask Rob Papen Support for a definit answer

This is an old but good synth. I don't agree in general that some soft synths are particularly cheap.
I for one am personally a bit tired of seeing €189 and $189 synths. Some of which are nothing special at all.
Synthmaster 2.8 is $64.00 !!!!!! and it rocks. Developers take note.
Competition is very high and I have not purchased a few of the synths at the +/- $189 price point because that is just not good value when you compare them to others.
It is annoying for me
but I share this anyway (I paid $79.00 one month ago for Predator I with NO upgrade)
In the interests of good Karma, JRR Shop is selling Predator for $79.00 INCLUDING the V2 upgrade.
https://www.jrrshop.com/rob-papen-predator
THAT is the the deal of the year. Get your credit cards out people.
I wish Rob Papen will make it a bit more fair for people who bought it only 1 month ago but will have to pay $49.00 for the V2. Fingers crossed.

A more accurate statement for the cartoon is : "Some peoples synth programming skills make it sound like freeware"

Oh, so it is up to 5th of May and strated from today?
Anyway, I have sent email to the support asking (I purchased it one week ago) if my purchase is included in the free upgrade. Well, if not, I will pay $49 for version 2
I only bought 2 synths above $101 but under $140, Diva (which I sold) and lately Reaktor 6. Serum is an exception because I'm paying $10 a month, which is OK by me, but I wouldn't buy it cash for $189!! (and not any other soft synth!).

No, the update is only free if you bought it before May 6th, no matter whether you bought it on their site or from some dealer.
I suppose that also applies to license transfers, after all, the buyer gets a new license and key. I don't think the date of the seller's original purchase counts.
Anyway, I am pretty sure he deserves those 49 euros...
