That St. Vincent guitar looks cool in sunburst, like a tripped out Firebird. If I had a triple mini humbucker guitar, I'd put the brighter Firebird pickups in the neck and middle and the darker Les Paul Deluxe pickup in the bridge, or maybe even get a pickup custom wound to sound more like a PAF. It'd be surprising if that doesn't already exist.

That looks like the trem on the majesty. PITA to intonate.Xiangqi wrote:if i had money for a music man, this is the one: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ernie-Ball- ... -Guitar.gc

Good to know. So that plate doesn't just come off to reveal a standard Fender-style trem underneath?

Not the one I had. Apparently it's allen wrench, but nobody had any clue about it at the time of which one to use. The plate was attached by two screws that could not but accessed from the cavity. You had to remove the trem.Uncle E wrote:Good to know. So that plate doesn't just come off to reveal a standard Fender-style trem underneath?
The JP's have a standard philips-head adjustment. Played a couple of the "expensive" ones but hate the Piezo and the back of the neck .... too much money (though it would be great if this had SS frets)

Just picked up a JP-15.
Took it to a gig this past Saturday.
I like the string spacing... and the neck feels good to me. (Easy to switch between JP-15 and 60s Les Paul)
I'm also a fan of the piezo.
Running it thru a Taylor acoustic guitar IR via Helix... it sounds very nice.
Not a fan of any piezo running straight to FOH. (Clack, smack, quack)
I've owned quite a few Musicman guitars over the years.
The JP-15 is one of my favorites.
A lot of the other models (Majesty) are just a little too "out there" for me (prefer a more classic look).
Had a JP-10 at one point.
Liked the Crunchlab bridge humbucker... but it would get darker when rolling off the volume.
Hated that... especially for live work
The cost of the JP-15 is getting up there...
Considering it's a Ball Family Reserve model, using higher quality tone woods, has a nice trem, and good sounding piezo (with adjustable bottom/top), the cost isn't too bad.
A similarly equipped PRS is about $1000 more.
I'm not crazy about the brown satin "Sahara Burst" color... but the flamed maple looks good.
Everyone has unique taste.
Some folks thing PRS guitars sound sterile.
I love them.

...picked up one of the Epiphone 'Pauls' with the P90s. It was $100 on sale at Guitar Center.
Whilst at the store, I wanted to spring for the J. Mascis Jazzmaster, but it didn't seem worth the $499. It's online for less ($400+). IMO, even that is too high. In playing this guitar, my impression was that a Squier comes with a 30%-50% overhead because of brand name. That is to say this one seems like a $200-$300 guitar.
It kind of fits in with a previous visit to GC, where I tried out a Squier 'Vintage Modified Jaguar' ($399), and whilst playing with the vibrato, one of the strings literally 'fell off of' the bridge.
When I start looking at 3, 4, 500 bucks, there are better brands out there. A G&L Fallout can be gotten for $379.
Anyway, Dinosaur Jr.... wow... just heard of J. Mascis, and checked them out a bit and they have some great recordings.
ymmv

Agreed. The one I played had super low frets, it was like a fretless without the benefit of being able to slide around. Totally worthless. The setup was bad, too.Xiangqi wrote:Whilst at the store, I wanted to spring for the J. Mascis Jazzmaster, but it didn't seem worth the $499. It's online for less ($400+). IMO, even that is too high. That's common with all Jaguars and Jazzmasters, it's caused by their bridge and vibrato. I patented a bridge design that solves the problem and also increases sustain, we make them one-by-one for the custom guitars we build and I'm in the process of getting them mass produced. It should sell for $39.99.It kind of fits in with a previous visit to GC, where I tried out a Squier 'Vintage Modified Jaguar' ($399), and whilst playing with the vibrato, one of the strings literally 'fell off of' the bridge.

Sounds good - I know a couple of people who've swapped Mustang bridges onto Jaguars. They're better but less than perfect.Uncle E wrote:Agreed. There is another problem brewing with this one, those guys overseas are really needing to mix in some sobriety......... (not my picture)

AND they had the springs attached on the block end on the string hole
Actually, made it worse fixing it
I suck, I think I'll quit.

We're back on track! Guessing it needed some adjustment time.
Kinda off topic, though I didn't suck at guitar, the metformin opening up a valve to my brain has me realizing my technique was god-awful. Oddly, this guitar was part of the catalyst for that.

I play with bad technique, with my thumb all the way around the neck like a baseball bat, Hendrix-style. That's the only way to do Hendrix chords and BB King vibratos. If those guys were bad, I don't want to be good.

My finger/hands are so small that isn't possible.
@trying to get this perfect ... if I could ever learn that there IS NO SUCH THING then maybe I'd stop gassing and get on with the living.

You're in for a treat. They reunited about 5 years ago or so and sound even better than ever. I actually prefer the newer recordings to those they did in the 1990's.Xiangqi wrote:Anyway, Dinosaur Jr.... wow... just heard of J. Mascis, and checked them out a bit and they have some great recordings.
