performing electronica live??

What do people here do when performing electronica live? I played my first couple of gigs a month or so ago and just fiddled about with effects a bit. On one song I played guitar. All in all the gig went well, but I would have liked to done more on stage.

I'd like a setup that allowed me to trigger midi sequences (sent to software and hardware) with a keyboard. It looks like Live4 does this, but I haven't installed the demo yet. Are there any other solutions?

Hey,

EnergyXT is a very flexible solution for all kinds of Audio and Midi stuff, and the live performance elements are getting better all the time.

You can, for example, have a midi part component which contains many different Midi sequences. Each one can be routed to one or more different VST instruments or audio samples to trigger, and then in turn each of these can be routed through FX and the like.

It can be set up to only trigger parts in sync with a ticking "syncroniser", so that everything will always trigger on the beat.

Most users of XT will tell you its the best 39euro you'll ever spend on music software, its extrememely flexible and can be used as a host, VSTi or VST effect.

Definitely check EnergyXT. It is amazing.

Another great host for live use is Audiomulch. As the name indicates, it focuses on the audio side of things. It comes bundled with some great effects, very suitable for mangling, and is modular. I'm currently demoing it, and thinking of using it along EXT.

Anything by Sonicbytes is worth checking out. I own ERA, which is a MIDI step sequencer and has some powerful features for live use. It can be used to drive any synth or sampler. EST has a similar interface, but has its own sampler. Gat'R is a step sequencer driven effect, but I haven't checked it yet.

I really like energyXT, i'll buy it sometime soon i think. i like modular environments. but the midi sequence unit didn't really make me feel like writing music..

Like you, I don't much care for the sequencer in eXT. It's powerful, but for me tedious to use in the extreme. And I don't think it matches the modular way of doing things. I'd rather have seen everything in the sequencer broken down into configurable parts, where you could easily sync between modules.

But the Midi parts should be exactly what you want. They're designed to be like a MIDI phrase sampler. Very useful.

Hey Shamann, I like the midi parts in energyXT, it's good that it can import midi files, along with the ability to use different bar lengths. but it hasn't completey won me over yet, I'm still looking around.

i like is the sequencer component of microTonic. I find it really comfortable to play when linked to a midi keyboard. One octave controls pattern selection, another octave mutes individual drum parts. It's a shame there is only 16 patterns though..

I want to go into my local electronic music store sometime to see if they recommend something else. perhaps there is a good bit of hardware out there.

It's frustrating, it seems almost everything is made for production use, not live performance.
