I know it's embarrassing to ask but Is this just a simple melody? A jazz riff?I'm confused. Why is it played with single notes with bass in left hand and melody in the right hand?

As BertKoor said, its very common piano arrangement where the left hand accompanies the right hand melody with arpeggiated chords.
