I´m a new Tracktion user and am really impressed about it but the more I used it the more I missed a floating editor and some kind of "traditional" mixer where I could get an overview of all levels without distractions.
I sent a message to Tracktion support about this issue and that they would probably get more users if Tracktion had a traditional mixer as an option and a separate dynamic "always open" editor that changed depending on what clips was selected.

This was their answer:

I thought this info could be interesting for other Tracktion users cause I got excited and are now looking forward to see what they come up with. Tracktion is really cool as it is and with some additions it would be amazing

To be honest, I think it would be a sad day for us long-time Tracktioneers if the continual requests for a "traditional mixer" cease. It's tradition. "I like how Tracktion is different. Make it less different!"

There's really only one reason to have a horizontal mixer: comparative levels. Other than that, it is (IMO, of course) a horrible way to mix. It's visually unrelated to everything relevant. In most cases the sections in it have fixed heights, which works against Tracktion's functionally superior flexible design.

Having said that, perhaps there could be a mini-mixer you can enable in the bottom section where you can add several track mixing sections to display vertically for comparative mixing. I'm not sure how that could be done effectively, though. What you usually want to compare is levels and it's possible to have multiple level editors per track. How do you deal with that? Tracktion doesn't have a track volume. It has as many track volumes as you want, including zero. Maybe a horizontal array of just the volume plugins from a few tracks? I think that would be even more useful than just a regular mixer panel. Sometimes you just want to compare the levels of a group of instruments and not be bothered with all the flashing lights of the others. And it would be flexible, which is good.

Early next year would mean Febuary not January ... Probably around Feb2nd . It coincides with the day the Groundhog decides if spring starts early or winter remains ..... It's a Tracktion staple or tradition for releases . About the mixer though ? We will see ...

A "pop up" / floating mixer window (that can be docked) seems like the perfect compromise for long term tracktioneers and new converts alike; you don't have to see it or use it, but it's there if you want it. Perhaps even an "add on" to select (or more likely, deselect)?

Now, how this influences the longer term development is harder to gauge, but I don't think anyone would resent the inclusion of an optional mixer if it was necessary for Tracktion to continue to grow (i.e. attract new users).

Suggest this is a necessity for Tracktion to reach a broader audience and dismiss any suggestions that the lack of a mixer doesn't make it "pro".

I really don't want a mixer though, not having a mixer is why I prefer Tracktion as a host. I accept that it could be an optional one but my fear is sooner or later it will lead to things that can only be done using the mixer and Tracktion will lose its distinctive workflow.

Reading between the lines here and I am assuming T is going modular... The Mixer might be some kind of extension kinda for the main T app. Building the DAW right to your needs. When your skill is growing and you need growing DAW functions, simply have look at the store and add that to your T. Like plugins in some way but with better integration in the Tracktion workflow and user interface. I'm just thinking loud here but it seems likely to me and I really would like it!

Its most likely to be a plugin. In the rack plugin format on every track that can be moved anywhere on the plugin chain to perform pre or post fader options by just moving the plugin left or right on the chain. Selecting the plugin will open the mixer in a Rack style plugin window with fader and meter plugins still present so all original Tracktion users will not feel like it change its work flow. This give you the best of both worlds or rather the best thing to do to get everyone on board satisfied with T8.

My first reaction is that as long as the old inline mixer is still there, I am unlikely to use a separate, horizontal one. I quit several daws before I found Tracktion, and the unconventional mixer was a huge attraction to me.

HOWEVER

I cannot convince some of my recording buddies to get on board with Tracktion for the very same reason. They can't imagine not having a separate, traditional analog style mixer. A compromise is in order, as is suggested above.

I may or may not use a standalone mixer panel, but I know at least a few people who might try Tracktion is it includes this proposed option.

A wider users base probably helps everybody who loves Tracktion and will help sustain the whole enterprise.

I'm on the other side..I'd love to have a traditional mixer section, but as a seperate module that could be toggled on or off, much like the way the menus, properties and mixer sections are now. So it still has the traditional mixer section, but toggle a popup traditional mixer..sure would make final mixes easier for me at least..I don't work with clips much, I mostly record rock/metal so hacing a traditional mixer and being able to see all my track levels and plugin chainsmside by side would be an awesome addition. Just my two cents

Here's an idea for a workable implementation of separate mixer:

Open a separate mixer window, drag in a Volume & Pan Plugin. The mixer window creates a mix track that is linked to that plugin. Also have an 'auto-populate' than takes all available Volume & Pan plugins and creates mix tracks for them. And importantly, when a mix track is selected in the mixer window, it's linked Volume & Plugin is highlighted at the same time.

To keep the single screen paradigm, it could also be implemented as a mixer mode that replaces the entire bottom panel.

Well, in just a few hours my time, it'll be the new year! I just want to say that I like the mixer as it is but I hope Tracktion 8 comes out soon with the bug fixes addressed! That's all I want!
