I got a used Macbook Pro a couple months ago. It's about 3 years old and has El Capitan on it.

My background is PC, I used Cubase SX ver 1 and 2, and I used a few paid VSTs such as BFD drums, Chameleon, and bunch of freebie Synth Edit creations.

I'm trying to get back into making some tunes again, was thinking of going portable with the Macbook and a USB focusrite card.

My coworker said that he like Logic Pro X.

I am thinking about giving it a shot since it's only $199.

I was wondering if I would be able to somehow use any of my old VSTs. I don't know what is around anymore. Wrappers, etc. I would mostly want to use BFD drums and just start finding some new synths.

Anyone care to give advice?

Logic use Audio Unit's, so look does any of your plugins come as AU.

On other hand, Logic X got drummer and factory library loaded with content (instruments, effects, samples and loops), you are more than covered, so my sincere advice is to explore& stick with stock stuff, Logic is really amazing package.

BFD won't be a problem (that is to say, I believe there's an 64bit AU version of it, but please check with FXpansion).
All Synthedit is 32bit AND Windows only, so that won't work at all.
Chameleon won't work either as far as I know, but Alchemy is now included with Logic so you sort of have its successor.

I personally wouldn't bother with wrappers, more issues than benefits in my opinion. Especially trying to run Windows plugins on Mac.. I believe there are ways but they're anything but practical.

Oh and Logic is great. Besides I think you'll find a slew of new (free) plugins that will work in Logic.

I'll have to find the box and discs for it to make sure but I just googled it and it seems that BFD could be installed as AU. I would need to check to see if such an old version is compatible I guess.

Many I feel stupid and out of the game. It's been a very long time.

I'm assuming that the Logic X drummer has velocity sensitive samples etc? I liked BFD for that and the ability to add some "imperfection" to my tracks so that it didn't have the machine gun effect.

Yeah, just checked, I don't think BFD 1 has 64bit AU (which is a requirement for Logic X). Can't speak for the quality of Logic's drums, sorry.

Bummer.

Well, BFD 1 is pretty old. Guess it's time to move on. I can't even remember when I first bought it. Probably 10 years ago.

BFD 1 did do an upgrade to 64 bit, iirc. I have the box, but I don't have it currently installed. I would check their site.

Oh, and the drums in LPX are quite decent. I was surprised. I don't find any use for 'Drummer,' though.

Alchemy was added last summer as an unpaid update. LPX is quite the package, imo.
