Totally agree with thischk071 wrote:Well, i think there is a big misunderstanding here. Most people who do music with their computers actually have Windows or Mac computers. Apart from that, you will still only get Ardour for free as source code, even for Linux, at the Ardour site.
Anyway, argue all that you want. If people want to get Ardour, they'd most probably visit the website. And see that it isn't for free, unless they want to compile, which surely only "specialized" people will even know what that means.
Ardour is as free as any VST plug is free because the VST developer kit from Steinberg is free.

Except that the source code for all VSTs aren't included in the VST dev kit. You can't just compile Zebra 2, for instance.Numanoid wrote: Totally agree with this

Thanks for underlining my point, that neither in reality is freelilyyy wrote:Except that the source code for all VSTs aren't included in the VST dev kit. You can't just compile Zebra 2, for instance.
BTW, I find Ardour users rather weird. Why is it so important for them make a point that their DAW is free.
Most users think about free as not so good as paid DAWs.

Saying that they are not fit for the comparison you tried to draw with them does not underline your point. Quite the opposite.Numanoid wrote:Thanks for underlining my point, that neither in reality is freelilyyy wrote:Except that the source code for all VSTs aren't included in the VST dev kit. I thought that's what you meant earlier but that falls into the territory of nothing being free. Obviously you have to pay for a computer to use any of this. But I think the scope is different in that it's offered post. Like free Kontakt libraries. Although I still don't quite understand your point about the VST dev kit. Ardour offers it in whole. The dev kit is only in part. Hopefully I understand the wider point.Numanoid wrote: Thanks for underlining my point, that neither in reality is free![]()
I don't use Ardour. It was just fun to argue because it's a strange idea that even though it's unquestionably free in certain instances that it somehow magically becomes not free globally because it's less accessible on Windows and Mac. An explanation is in order for all mentions of it but I wouldn't remove it completely from lists of free DAWs. Then it's basically in limbo even though anyone can get it for free if they want it bad enough.Numanoid wrote: BTW, I find Ardour users rather weird. It's open source. Hence "good". Harrison Mixbus (based on Ardour) is said to be buggy though. But you pay for that, so, no wonder that people point that out then. No convinced Linux user points out the bugs in his distro either. Or that the hardware support is worse, because the manufacturers obviously rather serve the 99% of people using their stuff on Windows, instead of focusing their workpower on the 1% who don't. Or that the software isn't at all up to par with professional paid applications for Windows. Or...Numanoid wrote: BTW, I find Ardour users rather weird. Reaper's 60 day trial limitation means I can't make videos (or songs) that are 61 days apart using Reaper for the audio parts. I don't have that problem with the Podium Free DAW.BertKoor wrote:@ the OP ( harryupbabble, that's YOU) Sorry to see that your harmless thread exploded into splitting semantic hairs and an endless argument about academic issues with an operating system none of the arguers actually use. Such is KVR sometimes
Anyway: why exactly did you abandon Reaper? I've been told that after the trial period it keeps on functioning without any limitation other than seeding a bit of doubt in your moral centre. Did that change? Besides that, isn't it totally worth it's modest price tag? Is a hobby not worth a small investment in the used tools every now and then? Just asking...
But yeah I think Reaper is better than all the "free" DAWs if it wasn't for that 60 day trial limit. And I would probably buy it if sold at the store in my city. I was all set to save to buy Cubase 7 about a year ago but the Cubase they sell at my city requires online registration to function. I think my computer is loaded with spyware and whatever and I don't want to buy anything online.
Anyways, yeah, people, if they wish, at their own risk, can just ignore Reaper's 60 day trial but it kind of nags at one's conscience. But if one doesn't have a conscience or fear of breaking some kind of law then yeah Reaper could be viewed as "free". Wrongly though.
Hey, how come xoxos is suspended? Interesting guy. Interesting plugins.

And even being free, they can't manage to get more users to get into it

I didn't see that, but i saw a lot of pissed off, and very rude posts here by the guy as of late. On topics i didn't even understand why they're so important for him, that he makes such a fuss about them, and gets so angry about it. I suspect some mental problems (and the only reason i mention that here pubclicly is because the guy doesn't seem to give a damn to crap over other people, and their feelings too).harryupbabble wrote: Hey, how come xoxos is suspended? Clearly speaking in ignorance there.chk071 wrote:No convinced Linux user points out the bugs in his distro either.
Well, depending on the source, Linux seems to have half as many users as OSX, but better hardware support. So the cause and effect isnt quite what you're claiming.Or that the hardware support is worse, because the manufacturers obviously rather serve the 99% of people using their stuff on Windows, instead of focusing their workpower on the 1% who don't.
I tend to believe that its more like some manufacturers not wanting to allow their competitors access to their code.
If you werent so curiously, prejudicedly, myopic, you'd actually have noticed that that depends rather much on the profession, actually.Or that the software isn't at all up to par with professional paid applications for Windows. Or...
99% of the websites you visit are probably on Linux servers, for example, and very few things are up to par with Apache.

Rather out of experience.whyterabbyt wrote:Clearly speaking in ignorance there.chk071 wrote:No convinced Linux user points out the bugs in his distro either.
Better hardware support than an OS which runs on custom build hardware. That's interesting. Also, most sources, including big portals like Statista point to about 2-3 % of home computers running Linux actually.whyterabbyt wrote: Well, depending on the source, Linux seems to have half as many users as OSX, but better hardware support. Anyway, i don't want to argue with you. Let's just agree to disagree. Even though i question the objectivity of your point.
