How do I turn off the internal mic on a laptop?

Haha, I had the same problem with a dell laptop that I borrowed last weekend for a gig! When switching microphones, the internal mic activates and the PA just starts alarming with feedback. Kinda annoying!
Here's the deal: I think the internal mic is hardwired to mic input, so that whenever there is something in the mic socket, the internal mic is disconnected.
If you want to shut off both the internal mic and the input, you open the mixer (double click the mixer) and set it to zero. You also need to choose options>properties>recording and untoggle mic as input source.
But this is my problem: if you want to keep the mic input live but disconnect the internal mic, I think you might have to go under the hood of the laptop and physically disconnect it... really stupid if you ask me.
