Thea von Harbou passed away in the mid 1950s but Fritz was around until 1976 so he got to witness the actual thing. Well, except for the participation of women part, of course...Wikipedia wrote:Woman in the Moon (Frau im Mond) is a science fiction silent film that premiered 15 October 1929. It is often considered to be one of the first "serious" science fiction films. It was written and directed by Fritz Lang, based on the novel "The Rocket to the Moon" by his collaborator Thea von Harbou, his wife at the time. It was released in the USA as By Rocket to the Moon and in the UK as Woman in the Moon. The basics of rocket travel were presented to a mass audience for the first time by this film, including the use of a multi-stage rocket.

Sunshine was great until they turned it into a slasher movie.

Event Horizon had a great concept behind it but managed to mess it up.
Sunshine was just an empty shell IMO. It was full of Alex Garland's classic moves of "I'm on page 40 of the script, I must Create Tension between Characters X and Y to demonstrate Deep Point that I think is Subtle (but is blatantly obvious)". For a while it looked as though it was going to be Huis Clos in Space, and so might have been a bit more interesting, but even that went by the wayside. Pretty images, though.

Tarantino had a problem with that if I remember right. Well, I don't.aMUSEd wrote:Sunshine was great until they turned it into a slasher movie.

Are we including short films as well? If so, a personal, long standing favorite of mine is - "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" - The Twilight Zone re-creation does a stellar job. Poetic but not too pretentious. Not quite as epic as most sci-fi films in terms of CGI + a massive hybrid orchestra that would rumble a theatre or even the thin classic sounds that is Forbidden Planet (2nd choice) . There is a lot of music, yet it's very minimal in character. Doesn't seem to get in the way of the story but rather enhances the lack of dialogue.

Yeah ... Uncanny and The Survivalist are pretty good recent examples too. I really enjoyed Under The Skin as well.

An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."
