I said nothing about PC's or Windows at all... I simply described what Mac's are good for and what they aren't good for. If you want to do lots of tweaking, exchanging parts, overclocking, etc etc... then Mac's are not good for that. What they are good for is if you want to be productive with minimal thought and focus on the computer itself.Zexila wrote:This is kind of straw man argument right here and actually not true that much, you can get PC and have similar experience, there's builders that will support you same as Apple, we aren't in 90s anymore, that stuff isn't really applicable anymore, I don't like Windows, but it's perfectly capable OS for non hassle audio.pdxindy wrote:If you want to play with computers, don't get a Mac. So follow or die basically, that's why getting into Mac's these days isn't all peaches and lollipops and all we are saying in this thread, it's quite the opposite for some, worth pointing out to newcomer, so he knows in what he is getting into.pdxindy wrote:Then don't upgrade. You can run a computer for years with the exact same software. It's great... no time spent on updates. You can focus entirely on making music, or whatever that computer is for.Zexila wrote:
Well, right now there's a guy that have perfectly satisfying Mac too, version of OS or DAW, but he is left behind too quickly, that's the real issue here, you are moving on and following Apple, he have no need for it.

It doesn't need to be that way, you can use them similarly as Mac's, without worrying about all that, all I'm saying.pdxindy wrote:I said nothing about PC's or Windows at all... What he said was:Jace-BeOS wrote:Not rubbish. Sometimes you have to replace hardware. When it's time for me to buy a new Mac (if Apple ever sells the kind i want), i will be forced to upgrade a lot of software because the new machine wont run Snow Leopard. So, yes, you ARE forced to upgrade at certain points. If i were in the situation of needing to rush to replace a dead machine, i would find your "rubbish" comment rather frustrating. Older, pre-owned systems aren't a cost effective option, either.pdxindy wrote:Complete rubbish...Rommelaar wrote:Once a year when Apple "updates" its operating system, your DAW and plugins become obsolete and all developers of plugins and DAWs must set aside everything else in order to resolve those issues.New to Mac please suggest all the things I've been missing!
Welcome to the brave new world of Apple and its own ecosystem!
First, and most importantly, nobody makes you update. If you install a freshly released full OS upgrade on a production machine, then you are an idiot and deserve what you get.
"Once a year when Apple "updates" its operating system, your DAW and plugins become obsolete"
That is just not true... pretty close to an outright lie.
And it's no problem to buy an older machine if that is what you want to do. You want to have a problem so you can complain about it. But it is just not actually much of a problem if what you really want are practical solutions and not a bone to pick.
I've owned a bunch of Mac's over the years. I used them for an average of 8 years and all but two were still running when I passed them on. It was only a handful years ago that I finally passed on my old pre intel OS9 machine which I used for hosting the Korg Oasys PCI card. The machine still ran fine. If I had wanted to keep using the Oasys PCI, I could still be doing that today.
I prefer to use the latest laptop and current software. But that is a choice and not forced on me.

Mac's are easy to deal with and basically, you are just whining because someone is not doing it for you.

Well there is a problem and solution isn't always don't question a thing and just spend more money, some aren't in that mindset and they don't want problem in first place and would rather avoid it, but there is one and knowing that it's valuable to determine do one want to put his money and trust there and in what he is getting or got into.pdxindy wrote:And it's no problem to buy an older machine if that is what you want to do. Don't know why reality and bad experiences of other people bother some of you that much, it's not all peaches for everyone or they wanted that to happen, it happened and it's real, they should talk about it without you shushing them, deal with it.
Yeah, let's recap, you fall for obvious troll and than guess unintentionally you trolled rest of us, few pages forward, here we are.pdxindy wrote:It is an interesting phenomenacryophonik wrote:OP: New to Mac please suggest all the things I've been missing!![]()

He received more info about the platform he got into, good&bad, not everything is peaches and lollipops, even that obvious troll left some bitter truth in his exaggerated statement.Gamma-UT wrote:OP asks for some software suggestions. Gets platform war.
I hope the suggestions were useful – at least it stayed on track for a while.

We are talking about if a machine dies, that it can still be replaced. That costs money. If the machine does not die, then just keep using it and no problem.Zexila wrote:

I pointed out how a statement was false... I said nothing about Mac vs PC or PC at all. Then you started arguing about PC because you read my statement and made an imaginary meaning in your own mind and argued with yourself.Zexila wrote:Don't know why reality and bad experiences of other people bother some of you that much, it's not all peaches for everyone or they wanted that to happen, it happened and it's real, they should talk about it without you shushing them, deal with it.

You are the one that started feeding the troll in first place and throwing statements, you are the one who first pulled out that old fact about how Mac's just works (opposed to other solutions), than mcnoone jumped in and we got ourselves Mac vs PC discussion, which ended fast, but than you got back and started getting personal and offering some solutions to me not even realizing Im not talking about myself (but of course disregarding to answer on some other things), than you dig up another argument later on (original Mac fact response from me) and reinforced that famous fact, answered you on that one and from there you started getting even more personal and being little nasty too and here we are.pdxindy wrote:I pointed out how a statement was false... Issue here is that fact is being repeated as some ultimate truth, than of course getting personal and little nasty towards people that just mentioned existence of an problem/reality, it won't disappear as a problem even if you get nasty or offer solution, still exists and it's worth pointing it out as such.
Believe in whatever you want, challenged that opinion and expanded on mine, no harm done, no need to get personal and nasty here or even spend more time debating all this, we disagree and that's fine with me, both sides presented arguments and there's not much left to do anymore.

Not. The pc only mac hating troll is the one who started it.Zexila wrote:

The ones who respond with refutations that aren't reliably challenged are not the causes of the topic change.
Whenever a mac vs windows argument erupts. Look back to the one who started it, and you will see that it is always, without fail started by a pc only, mac hating user.

Sure, but we got few trolls here that stayed hungry, but this one got his feast from pdxindy and we got leftovers from him, that actually started all this, not that trolling attempt, but response on it and statements that were presented in same (like unnecessary "complete rubbish" remark and later Mac fact).mcnoone wrote:Not. Mac's do just work... and very well... Apple makes a bunch of excellent software and it is easy to get started, even for people who do not know much because there is a fairly consistent GUI concept.Zexila wrote:

I made no comparison to anything else (Windows or Linux) nor did I imply anything. This thread is about Mac's and that is all I talked about. Anything about WIndows or Linux is created in your own mind... and you are the one off topic.
