yes, does length really matter?

i make music but most time my track just end up from 2-3 mins, lazy? no! i invest very carefully on compostion with rich melodies.....but still end up so short, i use twist solution and loop...... but i don't like to loop too much, i don't like repetitive too

but wow,i see other guys who usually make his tracks up 4-5 mins, and even 7-8 mins...that's crazy! but still attractive!

guess it depends on the genre - the majority of The Beatles songs are under 3 min

Things looks different if you make progressive club music and like to reserve at least 2 minutes for the transition only. My tunes go over 8 minutes and I don't tend to loop things longer than necessary.

meanwhile Brian Eno seems to consider a 15 min track short :D 'Thursday Afternoon' anyone?

though his stuff is just little pop ditties compared to this

Well, I've made a track that's just under 16 minutes long, so... :P

In all seriousness, it really doesn't. As long as it's pleasing to my ears, a song can be 5 seconds long for all I care. But as jdnz said, I'd argue it's also genre-dependent. Think this, for instance: how many 2-minute progressive metal songs have you heard? Not a lot, probably.
My solo projects:
Hekkräiser (experimental) | MFG38 (electronic/soundtrack) | The Santtu Pesonen Project (metal/prog)

I checked my own tracks -- the shortest is 0:46 and the longest is 8:46. (My new goal is a 10:46 song.)

I think how it used to be that an artist needed to supply more than 30 minutes in order to be able to sell it as an album.

Genesis in the 70's all of their albums from Foxtrot on was 50+ minutes. So basically they gave customers a side for free :tu:

The longest track I've uploaded to SoundCloud is 21 mins, the shortest is 2 mins.
Wagner's works were near the 4 hour mark. A death metal band whose name escapes me famously released a track that was less than 5 seconds long.
Music is as long as it needs to be.
So there!

But Napalm Death's "You Suffer" is even shorter :D

Short tracks are aphorisms.

Medium tracks are short stories.

Long tracks are novels.

Yes, it matters, and no, it doesn't matter. Depends on what you're trying to convey.

Most of my tracks are measured in miles.

I like to walk them in the afternoon, when there's a cool breeze.

I hope this helps.
