Hey all,
Don't post here much, but I'm looking into Logic Pro 9 and was wondering what you use it for, what are some of it's best perks, how well is recording straight into it, and how well does it function in terms of including instruments and effects for doing film score/ soundtrack-esque?
Any other feedback or advice about Logic Pro 9 is also very much appreciated! Want to get as much info as possible before committing.
Thx!

IMHO Logic is right in the golden middle (or on top for particular aspects) for majority of genres and tasks, lot of handy features that makes working with it a breeze, factory content and plugins are ace, I'm totally biased on this one being my DAW of choice.
It's among top DAW's for MIDI, there's comping, notation, video and etc, mixing in it is really great too, audio editing is not top, but it's better than what most of others offer.
If you already got a Mac, it's hard to beat it for what it offers, if not, than maybe look into Cubase with custom built desktop PC, cheaper machine build, more expensive DAW, so it nulls.
All day passed, seems like I'm only one interested in this thread and responded, what can I say more, Logic get's job done, that's the perk of it, it does things efficiently, sure, there's some bells&whistles in some other DAW's, but overall, Logic will finish faster, even if it starts slower with some things, it's old capable DAW made for everyone in mind, from bedroom musicians to studio professionals, not many DAW's does that, plenty cater to bedroom musician, but lack solutions pro's are depending on or will make their life easier.
You can't go wrong with Logic as backbone of your studio/setup, whatever you do or might do, it delivers, if you are doing beats, mixing, recording bands, doing scores or whatever, it's there and delivering, same can be told for Cubase and Pro Tools too, no wonder they are industry standards, they are really getting job done efficiently.

Do you mean Logic Pro X or 9 (I only have experience with X)?
Logic Pro X has a remarkable selection of instruments/effects and the algorithmic Drummer is great.
Apple Loop browser is useful and comprehensive. Overall an inspiring environment and great deal for the $$. I use Ableton Live 9 Suite more but dig in to Logic for heavier mixing/automation duties.
Things I HATE in Logic include:
- plugin window handling, worst of any Windows or Mac DAW I've used
- auto-creation of aux busses for virtual instrument/effect chains...such a mess, wish this was just self-contained as a "rack" on within channels
- inability to easily set up real-time audio recording (not freezing/bouncing) of arbitrary #s of tracks/busses
- per-project (not global) MIDI controller transport assignments
- difficulty of setting up internal step sequencers for different drum programs
- screensets don't save the display state of plugins within them

I'm on Logic 9 and the plugin window handling drives me nuts sometimes. Not sure if it's a Mac thing. I remember going from logic 5 on PC to Mac and being shocked by the slow redraw time on Mac. With logic on the PC the screen changes were instant, like the screen was completely loaded by the time I took my chubby digit off the number key. On Mac it manually redraws everything and it's brutally slow regardless of how fast the machine is. Besides that everything else is great for me.

Why Logic 9 tho? Cheap price?
If you can, get X instead, I absolutely love 9 and dislike X, but that's me, objectively speaking, X is way better option to consider, even for double the price, they added plenty and fixed plenty, ongoing support for current OS versions, 9 works best on 10.6.8, but even 10.9 is abandoned by some developers in 2016, so yeah, think about that for sure.
If you really want to get into 9, best thing would be to run it on 10.6.8, say goodbye to some vendors and maybe discover some new ones, if you want to stay updated and in present heading towards the future, go X and don't blink.

Logic automation is bad, no transform tool, no shape tools, it's a nightmare to draw a square shape on the piano roll hyperdraw.
Prefer to use studio one and you don't need to buy an Apple insanly overpriced device.

"Best things and perks about Logic Pro 9" is thread tittle, not "Please shit on Logic while you keep quiet about your preferred DAW's shortcomings".dupont wrote:Logic automation is bad, no transform tool, no shape tools, it's a nightmare to draw a square shape on the piano roll hyperdraw.

Why bother about best thinks and perks if a DAW has major drawbacks. Don't you think it's cool to warn ?Zexila wrote:"Best things and perks about Logic Pro 9" is thread tittle, not "Please shit on Logic while you keep quiet about your preferred DAW's shortcomings".dupont wrote:Logic automation is bad, no transform tool, no shape tools, it's a nightmare to draw a square shape on the piano roll hyperdraw.

Sure, but bring out the good sides than too for balance sake, it's only major in your eyes, like for someone else S1 could be completely useless without notation, you could care less about it and that's minor flaw for you, for other guy it's major, preferences and all that.dupont wrote:Why bother about best thinks and perks if a DAW has major drawbacks. One big perk it has over X is you can resell it. I bought mine used a few years back but haven't used it much as Live became my primary DAW.
If you're running an up-to-date Mac you might be better looking into X as it's being actively developed and they've added a lot of new stuff to it, like Alchemy. I'll probably pick it up at some stage when I get back to using Logic more.

I really like Logic, but I find editing clips is a bit hit and miss. Lets say you've recorded 17 and a bit bars of audio and you want to trim it back to 16 whole bars. It'll often trim back to 16 and a tiny bit bars... which messes up looping of the audio and just generally results in messy workflow.
Sometimes during playback of the transport, I'll add a plugin and it wont be available - it'll show up with a (!) exclaimation over the top of it in the track inserts view. When I stop the transport, it then comes back. Never have figured out how or why this happens.
Editing drums in it is a bit pants. I prefer to slip edit my drums, so I use Cubase or Studio One for that.
There is an awful lot to like though.

In the spirit of the actual thread, care to expand on some of those actually?Amberience wrote:There is an awful lot to like though.
Use different snapping option instead of smart which is there by default and it will snap right on the bar line or whatever you set it to.Amberience wrote:I really like Logic, but I find editing clips is a bit hit and miss. If you fall short, just pack a folder on those clips and loop it instead.
