An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

Very very very sad news
Another one of the last genius pionneers who we all owe so much regarding the synthesizers we use today is gone.
Unlike Robert Moog and some other genuine wizards, Don Buchla kept his business small, prefering to sell less units, but at high prices, and kept entire control over it until recently. While the core of his synthesizer concepts were invented back in the days -70s & 80s- , and he did not vary much after that, he also worked on various controlers, and on the musical gesture in the past years.
Terrible loss. I'm stunned.

Holy shit, that's heart breaking. Such a huge influence and a totally rad old dude. A wildly brilliant mind but very humble.
An acquaintance of mine was talking to him about his stance on clones/emulations of his designs and while it didn't seem to bother him much, he appeared baffled as to why anyone would want to replicate decades old technology. It seemed he was always looking forward. I value the few conversations we had at NAMM, even if it was just small talk. He was a huge inspiration for me.
RIP

As I posted in another thread, I've been in the same room with Don on several occasions at various SF Bay Area synth meets, but never said a single word to the guy. That will go down as one of my big regrets in life.
He will be missed.

A real loss to the synth world.
Buchla's machines were - are - like nothing else in the synth world. If you have ever had the good fortune to put your hands on one, you know what I mean.
His synths were relentlessly designed for the production of avant-garde music - not pop stuff. If Wendy Carlos was Bob Moog's musical guide, Morton Subotnick was Buchla's.
Did he ever put an actual chromatic keyboard on a synth?
His stuff was SO expensive ($53,000 for a tricked-out 200e.) But I will always regret never putting my hands of the Thunder MIDI controller. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GB86m7JvlMk/U ... 1600/2.jpg

One of my heroes in the 70s.
Wired my brain for the better when I 1st heard 'Touch'.
Post some Youtube of artists using Buchla synths please.
