I'm sorry, I was busy playing my guitar -- the prelude to Bach's first unaccompanied cello suite (BWV 1007), in C major, as arranged by Stanley Yates -- what was the point you were trying to make? I might be too, how shall I say this, "neurotypical" to grasp the intricacies of your thesis, but it almost seems like you're arguing that instruments with relatively limited sound design capabilities are necessarily inferior, and/or that soi dissant musicians desiring such instruments concomitantly desire that they should play themselves. Is that the gist of your argument, or have I done it a disservice?Dasheesh wrote:You know, I don't understand this whole syleth is better because it is less argument. That's a millennial edm thing. It's the same thing with these new video games. All the mods to cheat the game, make it stupid easy.
Here's a mod for you, once installed it displays the words "congrats, you won, no need to play." What is the freaking point? You guys just want a virtual button you can click and the whole thing pops out the other side done for you. Then you go around going "look what I did." Then you wonder why people "just don't get me man."
It's a balance, it's about good design. It needs to be functional, but the whole reason for being "functional" is the root word "fun", because you are supposed to LIKE playing with the instruments.
Now Hive is here, is it RIP Sylenth?

Well... yep, you didn't read it through I guess. Probably all the bad spelling. Keep reading.aumordia wrote:I'm sorry, I was busy playing my guitar -- the prelude to Bach's first unaccompanied cello suite (BWV 1007), in C major, as arranged by Stanley Yates -- what was the point you were trying to make? The answer is that having less does not make it better either.
Yet synthesizers are different than guitars. A guitar in default is expected.
A synth with the same tone all the time is not.
More features means more tonal possibilities. Which of course depends on the specific features.
More sonic possibilities for synthesizers is a very big influence for many reasons.
So ...like that.

There are no more discoveries to made on a moog. There are no more discoveries to be made on a prophet. You buy them because you like the sound. It's what you like. You buy them because you have gone through the process of discovery and learned what you like. The only valid argument for SYLENTH1 is you like the sound. It's the sound you like. It's what you are after. That's a valid argument. But there are no more discoveries to be made with SYLENTH1. It's been done.

Such weighty pronouncements from the sage Dasheesh! By the way, just to be sure I don't misunderstand, you do know that the root of the word "functional" is not "fun," but that it derives from the Latin word "fungor," meaning "to perform" -- right? Because that would only serve to undermine your own argument. Which I presume was your intention! Such majestic irony. Bravo sir! Compulsively playing "Skyrim" has really paid off.Dasheesh wrote: Well... yep, you didn't read it through I guess. Probably all the bad spelling. Keep reading.

I think its very subjective if Hive is Sylenth1 killer. When come to think of for me Sylenth1 was "killed" long time ago with other synths already. To be particular with Massive and Zebra 2 simply because they became my go-to synths.

LIKE.
It's the problem Urs was having earlier about "nobody can tell me how to improve it."
It's because the people he's asking don't know what they are after.
I love hive, I'm addicted, and it's because of the sound. I like the way it sounds. Urs knows when something sounds good. He is trying really, really hard to make an instrument that appeals to the masses and takes over. To do that, you have to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I respect Urs for trying, but honestly I don't think it's in him. It's not in his DNA. He is a quality over quantity kind of guy and I know where he is coming from. It's really, really freaking tough to give up your pride. Really, really freaking tough. Urs is trying very hard and I admire him for all he does. It's just super tough to strike a balance between the masses and quality.

HIVE sounds OK, nothing special in my opinion.

I'm trying not to post too much now because I have started drinking but I've never heard SYLENTH go brassy like Hive goes brassy. I'd like to hear an example of that.

People, you know that you sounds like those teen Android vs. iOS or windows vs. OSX (macOS) etc. wars.

I think this "less is more" is here the winner and that's why people still prefer Sylenth.
Anyway, besides this Hive/Spire/whatever vs Sylenth.. there is some cool stuff from other developers we will seen very soon:
Vengeance is working on a new synth "Avenger" and the first audio examples are very promising.
Rob Papen is working on Predator 2, release is planned very soon (Rob said end of September).
I don't know if some of this synth will be a "Sylenth killer" but they will be good enough to make some great track
