I throw some stuff in a blender and see what happens.
Slap OTT on it and you have new track, right Jasinski? :phones:

Hehe! I don't need OTT, my tracks are always OTT in their own right! :hihi:

Yes. That's all it takes.

Question: Is it ok to use a saturator/character compressor? Specifically, I'm wanting to use Variety of Sound's ThrillseekerVBL (and possibly also NastyVCS). I was skeptical since they do colour the sound a bit, but people here seem to be using Softube Saturation Knob and I've seen VoS' FerricTDS used before too, so I was wondering if it was ok to use those?

So I'm not finished, but I'll post my WIP anyway, just for fun and also to motivate myself to finish it. https://clyp.it/bnnfflrl

My current WIP thing uses TAL Reverb 4, ReaDelay (and 1 TAL Dub delay, but with no feedback saturation or resonance dialled in), W1 Limiter, TDR Nova, OTT, FerricTDS and ReaComp.

I really like the synth, you can get some lovely retro sounds from it, it instantly makes me want to simultaneously do Giorgio Moroder knockoffs as well as Kraftwerk homages. If I was a better musician/producer and had better taste, I'd go for a Todd Terje - Inspector Norse like track, but then again if I was Todd Terje I wouldn't be here, heh. I'm going to try and create 5 different rough versions in different genres and see which one sounds the most promising. Currently I have this version and a trance-y thing, but it's a bit difficult to get trance right with this because it's a bit unwieldy to make supersaws with. It's times like these when I miss Synth1.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing all the entries. The ones submitted already are fantastic!

I have a similar question. I have one instance of a saturator on a 303 track, and although it makes a big difference (mainly to enhance the "accent" which I think turned out to be very good) I can finish the track without it.

But there's another thing. I used one instance of HY-Filter in Formant mode just in the beginning of the track which is full of special/"film" effects. This one in particular is breathing, and never used afterwards. The HY formant is actually used only for automating the differences between inhale/exhale. Now, without this effect the whole "flow" and even story of the track is broken. With 2 instances of HY filter and one HY Reso it's even better.

This is how it sounds, WIP of course.

Hmmm...saturation is absolutely fine and has never been trouble. People even use transient shapers and such, which seems to push beyond what the synth can deliver, but still doesn't quite hurt the character. However, an attached formant filter seems a wee bit radical to me in terms of sound character. I normally couldn't care less, but if one is meant to believe that this sound comes out of the chosen synth, it could well be deceiving in a bad way. (eg:"How the hell did he do that with Tyrell?")

You should give it some more try and see, if you can find a different solution!
For Example:
- use the 32db filter at bandpass with proper cutoff and resonance and then control the mix spread parameter.
- Then you can totally use EQ or even a regular low-, band- or highpass filter to bring the sound back to where you want it. As long as you don't use resonance prominently, I believe such filters afterwards are ok as they only control the spectrum without changing the character significantly. (Pick any known actor's voice and put such filters on them and you'd still recognize them. Put a formant on them and things will go quite differently, you know!)

Here is an example (attached!)

Yes, that's why wanted to ask first. I already have several pure Tyrell breathing patches using the "secret" formant. Will continue that way I guess.

Oh, I apologize, no need to thank me! ;)

Tip: PAN modulation.

There is a hidden destination in the mod matrix: VCA pan.
To activate: browse through the presets and choose a patch which uses this feature. Use this as your init patch.

Basic rules question, sorry if this is obvious but I couldn't find anything (and I'm entirely new to OSC): is ableton autofilter excluded by the modulation rules?

Typically filter is allowed as it's a form of eq. Just don't go crazy with it :)
