The poll will give you an indication of;

1. What people are actually using (as that's what people vote for)
2. The readership of the website (a poll held at gearslutz or by SOS will probably give different results)
3. The type of DAW users who can be bothered to vote in polls!

Has anyone ever done any proper research on number of users (general) and number of professional users (people who make their living with music) I am not saying this is an indication of a better DAW (although perhaps the later) but issue 1. Seems to skew all polls to fruity loops /reaper as they are very cheap and accessible.

I would add that your number one is as much about the customer base that needs to justify their purchase more than/or as much as, they use it though!

I also think it maybe time for another infamous KVR bi-monthly DAW fest poll. And I think that some on this list should be purposely left off. i.e. those non-cross-major-OS-platform DAW's such as Logic/Garage; Sonar; ImageLine (Since comparing them in the overall scheme of things is a distortion at their best).

Yes, of course. But the point is that it's not indicative of anything from an informational standpoint.

What people end up with depends on all manner of factors. Price for one. Perhaps what a friends uses. Some will try several, but will they go into the full version or the demo version in enough depth to really make reasonable comparisons? Whatever came free with the mixer/interface might suffice. I might use an inexpensive one, but I'm not going to kid myself that it's the best.

Ok, if we are speaking to what is the best for us, then the last two years I have changed from DAW to DAW trying to find the best for me.
Last year, I voted Studio One but then I changed to Bitwig as I found the workflow better, but for some problems with Midi (unfortunately, they are not with everyone, but still applies in my setup), I finally bought a dongle (e-licenser usb) and to my surprise, Cubase begins to work perfectly (Retrologue and PadShop pro as well). I took the risk and upgraded from Element 8 to Artist 8.5. Wow, it is so nice to go back again to my decade ago when I used Cubase.

So, in short I voted Cubase. It is the best for me as it coveres everything I want, and to be honest, I can do all with its instruments (Retrologue, Padshop and Groove Agent SE). It has excellent colours and contrast. The GUI is perfect for me, and so comfortable to the eyes. It has great plugins as well, and much more: Arranger, Chord tracks, great Midi, great Drums editor and wonderful editing overall (midi and audio) with a great stability (with the dongle).

Now, there are some minor negatives, but they are not that much really. So, with Cubase, I concentrate on Music making, more than anything else (no cpu problems, no midi problems and smooth workflow that I already know for many years as Cubase was my second DAW after e-magic Logic (no! not Babya Logic)

It also very easy to find and configure my Blofeld patches list. Now I can browse the patches or presets inside Cubase with ease. So, it gives me a reason to go back using my hardware synth

By and large, if you do a legitimate poll of people actually making a living with music (and not doing anything else for a living, exclude part timers and hobbyists), for every category, production, studio engineering, whatever, I'd be surprised if PT still didn't come out on top.

To be honest, as a pure sequencer FL is pretty hard to beat. gol gets a lot of shit on Looptalk for sometimes questionable decisions, but it should speak volumes that a lot of people tend to like FL's piano roll, no?

Well, that and we have people like zircon (ISW) who use it for demos at least (see: Shreddage 2 IBZ). Now if only I could convince Ample Sound to make FLPs of their demo projects available. :U

Use whatever suits you. Learning to ignore people who criticise your tools and not your work goes a long way.
