What I tried, they werent too cutting edge... very usable though, very solid.

Id go RME or Sydec (www.sydec.be). Check out mixtreme perhaps...

I dont think I could suggest it as a purchase :-\

How many I/Os does your friend need?
There's a LOT of useful cards these days, in case you're on a budget...

I happen to HAVE one of those cards. It used to be called the Siena (now Marc 8 Midi) and was distributed by Sek'd (former owners of the Samplitude line). When I got the card it was definately top of the line 8 i/o audio card with 2 midi ports. It had very good, brand new, AKM converters (they are still decent but not great) and some extremely good drivers for win98. It's the first card that I ever managed a stable, sub 10ms latency even at 99% CPU usage (which is still pretty uncommon today).

However, the WDM drivers are not that good. The latency went up to about 20ms to get it stable and the GSIF drivers were very buggy (not that I ever used giga sampler). After using it for 2 years I bought the brand new (now discountinued) M-Audio Audiophile

, which I have still today. The life of my Siena ain't over yet as it serves as the main audio card in a friends studio.

I'd stay clear of the cards now untill they fix the WDM drivers and show some progress with the company. After Marian, who have always built the cards, took over distribution from Sek'd, things slowed down dramatically. There has been only 1 or 2 driver updates to the old range in all these years and the website has been the same for quite some time.

he specifically told me he wants balanced converters, and specifically NOT echo, cause of a past bad experience. otherwise i would have sold him the spare mia midi i had. anyway i want to do this system rock solid for him and have a happy "customer". This is a bit of a test for me as I am building the sytem from absolute scratch....in the future future i want to build pc DAW'S on the side for extra cash.

Why not just tell him to get a Mac? No building, it just 'works'. They never crash either!
