that's a 'kin genre name now? FFS. Robin Guthrie would probably have punched you in the face for using that in the same sentence as 'Cocteau Twins'
no...not now..."WAS"....past tense.

you guys are not seeing the forest for the trees here. im not saying these different genres dont exist...or are not really different.

lets review:

1. the op asked for recommendations for dark neoclassical AND "other stuff"...it would follow then that they maybe dont know a lot about the music and its many permutations...which is why they are asking.

2. it has been established that the genre names get confusing and mixed up for people.

3. there is an obvious link and similarity between the more etheral artists and the more neoclassical-darkwave artists

i dont think its beyond the scope of possibility that the op might be interested in checking out my suggestions, especially based on the description he gave.

there is no point in having a pissing contest about it. he will either be interested in my suggestions or he wont.
Ok, the point here was not to open a discussion about what is the genre exactly etc...
That's the reason i've said "AND other stuff", not because i don't know a lot about the music.
I'm aware that many of the bands mentioned here are overlapping many genres.
A thread called "Some nice music, please" doesn't make any sense.
If the subject was a bad idea, sorry about that.
So i wrote this post and give some names to start the discussion.
There is a lot of new music coming out daily, since decades.
I just wanted to know if i was missing something in a "genre/direction/color" i like.
And maybe, if someone here is making music influenced by that, i would be happy to discover it.
I've watched all the videos and even if i knew many, i like many of the ones i discover.
You're right, no point to have a contest about it.

BTW, I have the same problem every time i publish some music, they ask me to say what kind it is and i don't know.

Thanks to you and everyone who send me some links, much appreciated.

Well, you must consider at that time there were no internet and no computers. We used to send our demos to record labels, they directly listened to our music and if they liked it they put you under contract. Oh, tough times when we had to order 4AD records via stamps and letters, directly coming from London and waiting for weeks... And often happened that the "careful fragile" packet was bent and the record inside broken

Nowadays it is so different, record labels exist no more, no need of fanzines and reviews anymore, just a click and you immediately know wether you like that music or not. Furthermore, today anyone can play their music thanks to computer software and "publish it" on youtube, soundcloud etc. I guess they just have to fill out a form with items such as "instrument used", "genre" etc. That is the reason of labelling music nowadays. The problem is that the "genre" you are looking for does not exist nowadays, unless you put a check next to "ethnic", "electronica", "folk", "classic", "other" and hope people understand it's nothing of all that haha

I can tell you i know exactly how that was at this time. I live in Belgium and once a month we've been to London with a couple of friends, with the car on the ferries (no tunnel at this time) and we came back with the car full of vinyls and later with CDs.
I remember we had a magazine here (called Rock This Town, if i'm not wrong) and every month, it was full of letters from ppl arguing and insulting each other about what was real new wave, Depeche Mode or Cure.

I know times are changing but till very recently, i was co-managing a micro label. Closed now because of personal issues for my partner. :(
And now that i'm looking for a new label for my next album, i see they all do the same.
A private Soundcloud playlist and they contact you if they like it. Then discuss and send better demos etc....
We did the same, spend many hours at listening demos, you can't imagine what ppl send you.
IMO, it's not very different, just that we can sometimes make a deal with a label in USA or Australia or Japan. That was not possible before internet.

I worked on this micro label with a Norwegian guy. Internet, Skype, Dropbox....
And i can tell you that when my CD was released, i had to pay a huge tax to import it from Norway because it's not EU. But I'm happy i had this opportunity and that was not something i could imagine 30 years ago.

Wow, 30 years ago :dog:

Users can have different opinion about what neo-classical and other stuff actually is.

That is just the way it is.

Too me the best definition would be something like In The Nursery's Blue Religion, but that is just me

Intriguing.

Bel Canto/Biosphere, Per Martinsen put out their best stuff via Belgian labels.

We have a couple of well known labels here : PIAS, Crammed discs, Les disques du crépuscule.

ANd Belcanto did a very good album with White-Out Conditions, great album

My former voice teacher Sylvi Alli has recorded a lot of great stuff in this vein, much of it for soundtracks to the experimental films she makes with her husband .
