Roli Seaboard RISE

Hello!

I just opened the dashboard for the first time and it said there was an update for the seaboard rise 49 OS. I installed the update and after installation only first half of the seaboard keywaves seem to be working. (Updated from version 1.1.2 to 1.1.5)

Has anyone else had this kind of problem? I left a message in Roli support but of course they are not working on weekends.

I had several problems with a few updates (their software part needs better work!).
I gone back to an older version and it works.
I have a bit trouble with the sliders now. When i turn them off and switch from the expressive mode to the midi learn they go back to a default setting. Only when i do it again it works....strange things.
You could try to reset your Seaboard in the dashboard and/or connect to an older version (if you saved it).
So i love the Seaboard but have very mixed feelings about the software developement

I tried to do reset from the dashboard but that didn't help. I just got the seaboard 2 days ago so I don't have any older versions of the software saved.

Is there any way to revert an update or downgrade to an earlier version of the seaboard OS? I think the problem is with the seaboard, not the dashboard since it did work before updatind seaboard OS (not sure tho..). Still waiting for an official response from Roli.

Strange that such huge bugs still happen.
I hope they will solve it fast.
The support from Roli is great but the software developement not.
What happens when you click trough all the octaves force and back. Once it solves some problems for me.
I also recommend (after the things get solved) to try every keywave with different velocity.
I had a faulty Seaboard where i got by random 2 different notes when hitting the same keywave exact in the middle with higher velocity. After my reseller won't help me (f.y. musicstore) Roli replaced it pretty fast for a new one after i explained it and it couldn't get solved by software
I have the Rise 25 and thought about to sell it and buy the Rise 49.
How i said....i have a bit mixed feelings because those things are not small bugs for me and i don't see a sign that it get better yet.
They are the new Apple in the music biz
But i'm still looking forward what hardware they might bring next.
It's a love/hate thing at the moment.

I had a problem with seaboard not detecting all of the keywaves after seaboard OS update.
Just wanted to let you know that Roli support is good. Got an email with good instructions and a manually updateable firmware file. Now everything seems to be working fine again!

I'm about to get one of these and am a little on the fence about it. I don't have an easy way to demo these. Before I pull the trigger, I would love to hear from anyone who has good or bad overall experiences after using it for some time. Also, is there any word about them releasing a new version anytime soon?

Same here, there is no way to test Roli where I live, so I'm on the hold. Regarding newer version - no one but Roli can tell this, meanwhile it is no secret that 49 key version of Rise is unavailable for some time at Roli online store and their special offer for 25 key version (the only remaining Rise controller in the list) ends on October 31. So it is quite likely Roli may announce something before Christmas, however I doubt that there will be radical changes feature wise. Roli hardware range seems pretty complete. Of course, I'd be happy to see Equator hardware module and support for splits and multi-timbrality, but doubt that this could happen.

I also would wait until Christmas to see what they have to offer (maybe). They also have some great offers from time to time like the full Bitwig Studio DAW (bought mine a few weeks before ), max for live things, some other synth plug-ins etc.
I think there is always(?) the 8-track Bitwig included now (which you could upgrade).
But they also aquired the people behind FXpansion and seems to grow fast (too fast maybe...).
But i like my Seaboard even in "normal keyboard mode" more than real keys.
I'm surprised how good it works with things like Keyscape (Spectrasonics) for velocity and/or aftertouch and playing fine nuances etc. But i'm using multi-touch screens often and so i'm biased here maybe.
Another huge plus is that you can play all your monophonic synths (or synth with limited voices) multi-timbral if your DAW or plug-in let you split midi channels.
So you could play 15 instances of a plugin (or 15 different plug-ins etc.) with different settings like one big multi-timbral instrument (watch your cpu/ram...).
Also when you using iOS devices they play great together with the Seaboard.
Apps like Mitosynth, Animoog, Model 15, NanoStudio etc. are awesome to play with it.
I love the feel of the silicon ( ....) but it's hard to say if others would like too.
I don't tryed the Linnstrument, Continuum, Soundplane and stuff but since i'm more a friend of the keyboard layout and wanted the most tactile feedback while still having those expressive options to play the Seaboard was my choice. The others looks for me to "flat"...almost like a slightly advanced multi-touch screen.
But the keywaves have the problem that diagonal slides and changing pressure of aftertouch, means using X,Y and Z axis at the same time with one note, is not working so good like on a flat surface or multi-touch screen like an iPad/iPhone.
So you might using mostly "just" 1-2 of the dimensions at the same time per note while you can do even more expressive things with the others.
Of course it's often not neccessary and over the top.
I mean my iPhone with 3D touch would be the most expressive midi controller since it has all the five dimensions plus additional via gyroscope, accelerometer and more but it's not really usable all in a musical way (but awesome for some sound design).
So every device has it's pro and contra and the Seaboard is at the moment the best controller for me to do the things i want even when it lacks in some areas.

Mmmhh.....
Now things got worse again. The software is really so annoying buggy i just have to say now that i would not recommend a Seaboard Rise now. I just can talk about my own experience but this love/hate thing get more and more in a hate only thing.
I just hope it is not (another) hardware fault and "just" another software bug but it makes me a bit angry now.
The support is awesome and friendly etc. but at the end it doesn´t help if things get not solved, new bugs get introduced and there is no sign of things getting better.
I gone trough this now for several months and i lost trust in this company now!
The dashboard is still the biggest issue. Also the sliders of my Seaboard doesn´t response like they should. When i turn the slide, glide and aftertouch off, switch to the midi cc mode of the sliders and back, the values are not at zero anymore. I need to move them 3-4 times until they stay at zero.
Even when the single led light is at the middle (which means it should be at zero) it isn´t. When i switch now force and back between the mode the value is near zero and i still have aftertouch, slides and glide events.
In a live performance the Seaboard is not usable in this mode for me now.
They seems to have/had several hardware, software problems and i think it´s a NOGO for a product in this price class.
But seems i´m just out of luck and in all those commercial videos everythings seems to work fine
As soon as i get finally a software which works i sell the Seaboard and look for a more reliable thing.

It's sad to hear of all the defects and software quality issues, because I want something like this controller and I would hate to deal with yet more tech industry bullshit. Luckily, I'm too poor to buy one anyway.

I want one of these, but I'm too poor to buy one. Luckily, they don't seem to have worked out all the design problems, so it's easy to hold off on saving money to buy one and wait till all the bullshit is worked out.
