are you serious? it's a very powerful daw for ALL ages.Kimuchuu wrote:FL Studio seems to be very popular for the kids. There's also tons of tutorials for it, and also big youtubers who's channel resolves around FL Studio.
this out of hand dismissal of it as a toy gets really old, really fast.
if the op is looking for something 'affordable' then he could get reaper.
amazing price and amazing program for about 60-70 dollars..

Acid Music Studio (formerly Sony, now Magix I think) is inexpensive, very easy to get your head around, reasonably full featured, and of course offers the instant gratification of loop-based production-- after 10-20 minutes of tutorial watching / guidance from Dad, he could be making tracks straight away. I don't know how well it plays with special controllers though. There's a month's demo available, I beleive.

I'd start by demoing all the sub $100 products until I find something I like, if money is an issue. Reaper, MuLab, etc, etc, etc... anything who's "full version" is under $100
For literal "bang for the buck" (overall, the other random personal preferences aside) FLStudio & Reaper are pretty hard to beat... although... the $99 FL doesn't record audio, but if you pay a little more so you can record audio with it, you still only have to pay once, ever.

+1pottering wrote:In my personal opinion and experience, just get Ableton Live 9 Intro with that coupon.
Kids can be faster than us in figuring out how to use gadgets! Especially when related to their own interests (like games?). So, Live intro 9 is not that difficult. You just need to show him how to do it in the session view and he would fly with it! Of course the learning starts and you will face 100 questions a day
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Bitwig 5, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

i agree. and it's worth noting that once you buy FL you get free updates for life : )LawrenceF wrote:For literal "bang for the buck" (overall, the other random personal preferences aside) FLStudio & Reaper are pretty hard to beat... although... the $99 FL doesn't record audio, but if you pay a little more so you can record audio with it, you still only have to pay once, ever.
reaper is worth looking at as it's cheap and it is updated constantly.
just my opinion

Pretty much this, for the price a Push 1 goes second hand there is simply nothing better. Use it with live intro or lite.xx JPRacer xx wrote:Ableton Push1 which can be pretty cheap now. Come with Live Intro and can work with Bitwig too.
SInce Push actually helps with composition he will enjoy it a lot more than any other surface, it is very well build too so it can take some abuse.
I would avoid Reaper, Cubase, FL studio, StudioOne, Protools or logic for a 12 year old, well almost any software wich lacks an interface as Push might not be the apropiate choice for a kid. You need something more direct and fun, specially fun which delivers quick results so the kid keeps his interest going and when he gets more in to it he might get with the technical stuff.
Push with its step sequencers and in scale mode will make composing much more fun than drawing stuff with a mouse or recording in real time with lots of errors.

The OP is over a month old now, but for a tweener or early teen I'll recommend Stagelight. I'm not crazy about their "app model" because much like freemium games the costs rack up quickly if you're not paying attention. However, as an affordable, user friendly, entry level DAW, it's tough to beat. It's very touch screen friendly, too, which most kids will like.
There's a short thread on page 2 about it:

I never once said it wasn't for all ages. I simply said it is very popular for the kids. A lot of young people seem to get this DAW. Most of it is because it is well known on "social medias" like youtube and now collaborates with the gaming brand Razer. With their mascot and everything, it is very clear that they're marketing to the "younger generation". It has an excellent features and is not too expensive like a lot of other companies make their products.inkwarp wrote:are you serious? it's a very powerful daw for ALL ages.Kimuchuu wrote:FL Studio seems to be very popular for the kids. Just wanted to say this to clear up. I use FL Studio myself a lot. Not a toy, a fancy looking, excellent piece of equipment (which i love). ; )
No hate.
